Last night there was a very interesting programme on BBC2 about food in the 1950s. They talked about a 'National Loaf' which they said was a type of brown bread (and not very nice) and whilst I can remember most of the other foods that were mentioned (although I don't think the packaging on the 'National Margarine' was correct) neither myself (local) or Mrs J (North of England) can recall a Brown National Loaf. Can anyone remember them?
 
I enjoyed the programme. I was born in 1952 so I don't remember but other programmes have said that it was wholegrain bread so it would have been darker.
We had a good laugh about the tin-opener!!

Noting the court proceedings detailed reminded me that I was told that throwing bread on a fire was 'very wicked'. Bread was frequently known, in the past, as 'the staff of life'.

I am not sure when the last 'bread riot' occurred in Britain but I am sure somewhere in the 150 years ago thread mention was made of bread riots. To refresh those unfamiliar with ' bread riots, they occurred, as far as I remember, due to high prices for flour being imposed putting buying and making bread beyond many people.
