This view would be unrecognisable today if it weren't for Central Fire Station. Aston Street (to the right) looks to have been a much busier and crowded Birmingham street in the 1930s. In the aeriel view, the Fire Station seems to take up a substantial amount of space.

More recognisable for me in picture 2 but only just. I only knew this area for a few years as I attended the Mathew Boulton School of printing from 1969-72. Even then the Uni buildings dominated things on the left side of Aston St.
 
The building of the Fire Station obviously had a major impact on Aston Street. Not only did the new building house the new fire station and accommodation, but retail premises were included in the design. The retail units on Aston Street still exist. See today's Streetview image attached. Today Cyc-Autos is 'Rio's'. Motor Sales opposite the fire station was there until at least the 1950s.
