Aston Road North - Modern & Old Together

Dave_G

proper brummie kid
Hi I'm new to the forum and love old images of Birmingham. I'm a dab hand at Photoshop and wanted to blend the old and modern outside my work (Capgemini) of Aston Road North.

I'm also looking for any more images of Avenue Road in Aston as people where i work would be interested in how it looked before Capgemini was built?

Hi dave ;
nice pictures ; thanks for the memory as i only lived a couple of hundred yards from there
and the old libaryu andthe bank and the golden cross and the far corner building
on the corner was lathams the wall paper and paint family
before them it belong to my family for donkeys years it was a tea room [ coffee house
owned by my grand father and his familyfrom at least the thirtys if not before
all his brothers owned it and passed it through there family to each other
and my particular grand father was last in line whom was responible for selling it
that was ernie jelf ;
i hope some-one can produce the avenue picture as i went to st mary church and the school where you got a hot coco for a drink in the morning and your little bottle of milk late after noon ;
and my nans house and garden backed onto the school play ground i used to bunk over the wall on going to school and going home
best wishes astonian;; alan;;

Thanks all for the comments.

What has shocked me the most from looking at old photos of Lichfield Road, Aston Road North and other parts of Aston, is that following the redevelopment they decided to replace what appears to be a bustling Aston community with dour factory units, fly overs and office buildings!! I think i would rather have seen them replace the old back to backs with newer houses and kept the community together.

Very interesting photos of the old and new!
I haven't been in Aston Road North for many years so I am sure I wouldn't recognise it now.
I remember the clock, did the number 8 bus route go past?

Dave really like these pics, and agree with the comments about the impersonality of the new buildings taking away the character of the area, pity the planners didn't have the same visions as us!

Ok, this is not Aston Road North, but i spotted this old photo and decided to capture the current view during my lunch break at work.

This is the corner of Temple Row and Bull Street in Birmingham, showing the Ye Old Nelson Pub which was bombed in 1942 and the current building where the once Blacks camping store was located.

This is Chester Street in Aston; the parts in colour is what is remaining in this street; It was difficult to superimpose the new buildings against the old factory building at the end of the road, but i think i got it?

Hi Lyn

Is it possible to change the name of this thread or should i create a new thread and upload the images again?

hi dave i dont think we can change the thread titles from our end...well ive tried in the past and couldnt but that could just be my lack of technical skills lol...if i were you i would send a pm to postie and ask him to change it for you as he is at the controls...

Suggest we leave this thread and start other threads covering different areas, it helps when searching the forum if different areas are kept separate, and that the thread title is more appropriate.
We can change thread titles if required.

HI GUYS ;
Does anybody recall the name of the big printing company that was at that end of the rd
also palmer and shelley food whole salers just up past the albion pub andwhite house street
also any developments of getting old pictures of the avenue ;such as the church or the school
the old man [ senior ] mr fletcher started his bussiness there for his sons and grand sons ; whom ran and built fletchers motor car parts
on dartmouth rd many years later
mr fletcher lived in a little house yards from the corner of the avenue and way back in time the thirtys and fortys
he used to sell in orange boxes head lamps and bulbs and wiring ;he would charge 1/6d for a head lamp
in orange boxes just out side his house in the avenue rd and just facing the st mary school where i attended whilst my mother was haveing a kid in hospital
we stayed with our nan in white house street aston around the corner ;
best wishes astonian;

Alan I think it was Palmer and Harvey not (Shelly) I remember doing electrical work there.Dek

I remember Palmer & Harvey from years ago. I worked in the wholesale grocery business firstly at John Wilson & Sons on New John Street West and then
Francis Nicholls Wholesale Grocery Division on Upper Dean Street. I also remember Warriner & Mason,Brown, Hopwood and Gilbert Wholesale Co Must have been on Lench Street with loading bays facing Aston Road North. Found a ghost sign on Flickr of Palmer & Harvey's old premises. I will post it on the ghost signs thread.

The white frontage was where i started work,my first job,it was the old offices/showrooms of the old MEB,as the building towering above was MEB too,see the arched top of the windows high up,those window frames were made of phosphour bronze,and worth a pretty penny.
Also Tyreweld made remoulds,as my gaffers(and myself doing the welding)copied the machine that pushed two halves of the moulds together(all the machine body was made using 3/4 inch plate i think,and stick welded by me using no. 8 rods),so giving the company extra capacity,without forking out on a brand new machine.
The chap who owned Tyreweld used to drive a brand new MGBGT,and i'm going back to 1970/71.

Hi sylvia
many thanks for putting me right ; yes indeed it was most definately randles and also it was palmer and shelley after
and you would over see it as you travelled towards the dartmouth ring rd once you passed the albion pub
the incline on the approach to the junction ; across the rd from the albion pub on the same side was a news agent
and my nan lived down the white house street up the opening which ran behind st marys play ground [ school]
from that news agent i usedto run down to the p[aper shop and fech the boxws of snuff for my nan and uncle joe
my dads brother ; and i recall all the shops from there right up to the golden cross ;
and incidencely there was a small hardware shop amongst the parade of the small shops in front of ansells
where they comissioned by concil and demolished them as ray thought it was the big broom which was not ; as the big broom was along past there on the aston rd north end but yes he was correct to mention a hardware shop ; but it was not the big broom as he thought ; sorry ray ; best wishes to every body ; astonian;;;

These are brilliant Dave, a very clever and effective way of showing what used to be where. Looking down a street these days it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the previous buildings or street alignment (in cases where it has been changed) were. Very impressive!

HI DAVE ;
Very nice picture of chester st as some-one pointed out from the top of the picture the building facing is of tubes holding limited
but prior to that in the early years it was hercules cylcles whom made the old green police push bikes with the steel hand brakes and an automatic
front and back dynomo to give the head lamp a light and as with the rear back light at the same time
it was there head offices ; and the whole of the building coming towards you from the corner was the old midland electrity board
known to brummies as the old MEB; thats where the wrought iron gates are ; after that the building was some think different
my oldest brother whom is still around today despite is age was an apprentice there with a guy called ron ;
icidently my oldest brother is also called ron; and a couple of other guys way back in the fifties and it was the first flood lights for villa
and they starred in the front page of the birmingham despatch r the birmingham post ; they had there pic taken standing by them
tubes limited offices are facing chester street and thats where bazz and myself worked there together he was in and out of the office and me
on the over cranes and lifting out his work orders also i started to do the ground work as well in the foundry as there where i started and worked up the chain ; untilmr fisher whom was a neibour up the next terrace of 2;96 lichfield rd gave me the opportunetity to climb up to the over head cranes
and i beame numbe one crane driver in the foundry loading orders to be taken out of the foundry bill antobus was the senior forman
there was another guy by the name of jim whom i cannot think of his surnae at the moment; but the wople of tubes people was a great crowd and a company to work for ;i still contact bazzm now and again ;unfortuneily i wanted to meet up with him but owing to my circumstance at the pub meeting i could not meet up with him and any other members of the forum , but there wil be another time in the future ; best wishes t you all and thans dave ;;
