Aston Lane now which appears to be Aston Hall Road

MikeP

master brummie
From around 1910 to the 1960's my great grandmother Elizabeth Maull and some of her children including my Grandmother Alice Maull lived at 16 Aston Lane. As a very young child I can just about remember visiting the house and I believe it was somewhere around where the Aston Express Way fly over is today in an area I think initially turned in to an Asda store. There appears to be two Aston Lanes, I am referring to the one now called Aston Hall Road. I am searching for any Photographs of this road of any type, prior to to the 1970s. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Than you

Thank you pjmburns and Astoness for the links. I do use this map site already it is fantastic and I recommend it too.

I have got a bit of a project I am working on as part of my family history and that is to try to piece together from images, roads and areas where my ancestors lived prior to these areas being knocked down in the 1960s/70s. I have had some success with other roads and now trying Aston Lane/Aston Hall Road.

Attached are a couple of images I have acquired on line and a third attached with my Great Grandmother standing outside her house. The one where the next door has been knocked down looks very similar to my grandmothers place.

Any images of this road or the houses or stories would be really appreciated.

Mike

WOW you have a map with numbers on it, that is fantastic. It shows that Number 16 is slightly proud of 14 which matches an image I have of my Great Grandmothers house. Thank you so much.

WOW mikejee, thanks, that solves/answer a question. That is the same as the B/W image I have and based on the map you posted earlier I see two sets of two houses that jut out a couple of feet forward of the others. No 16 and 18 and then 24 and 26, the last house is set back and then a change of style so those white 'timber' or timber effect buildings are 24. 26 and the one set back 28. Sadly it is not my great grandmothers house (I thought it could be) but identical and just a few yards down the road and there is a little more of the street too. Thank you so much.

There is this 1950s photo of Aston Hall Road from the Keith Berry collection

and here is a photo dated 1897 of the holte almshouses which was opposite no 16...this is a view your gt gran would have seen every day...look closely and on the left you can see the 2 gate post with heavy balls on top...compere those to the gate posts on the photo showing your nan outside her house...they are identical so a very good chance those children were standing outside your gt grans house

WOW you are right, that's incredible, thank you so much

Although a bit of a lousy image, the last person to have lived in the house was the man on the left Albert Maull with his wife Gertrude. He was my Great Uncle and I am assuming this it the house based on the appearance behind them. The man on the left was my father. I visited this house when I was about 7 or 8 when Albert was ill, he died in 1966 and after his death the houses were knocked down and his wife was sent to live in a high-rise in Harbourne, and died lonely and away from her friends.

yes the area now cuts a very soulless area..bland and no life going on just noticed on the map that the aston tavern pub was only a couple of doors down from no 16 ..at least its still up and running
