Brummie On Exmoor
master brummie
One of my ancestors (one of my 'Twigs' as my Husband calls them as they are not absolutely direct!), called Alfred Thomas RILEY b1874 in Aston is on the 1901 Census as a Visitor in the home of his married sister in Acocks Green. His job is described as Assistant Secretary GMCA, which has been annotated by the Census taker 'Guild'. I have Googled this to no avail, and also tried to find a reference in the 1900 Birmingham Kellys. Please can anyone come up with an idea of what this organisation was.
Alfred, single and in his late 20s, had worked previously as a Pawnbroker's Assistant on New Street, but this might be a red herring, as other brothers began as Pawnbrokers but went into other lines. The family grew up around the Market Hall area.
Many many thanks
Jane
