Ashwood Millward

Tinpot

master brummie
Ashwood Millward married my great grandmother Emma Adkins in 1886. Attached is a court record from 1885 of two cases where he was found guilty of larceny from a person and theft of 60 iron ladles from a warehouse. A second record says that he got 6 months to run concurrently at Birmingham Prison. I am assuming this is what I know as Winson Green? Can I access the prison/ police records anywhere ?

Thanks MSW. He is still quite elusive! I have found a record of the birth of a Delia Millward in Aston 1891. Emma Adkins did not marry Benjamin Crumpton until 1919 but he is named as the father of my Nan Emma Crumpton B 1894 on the copy of the birth certificate. Tinpot

From what records there are (and from the details on your other thread) it seems likely that Ashwood abandoned your great nan and possibly changed his name or left the country.

However, as she eventually married Benjamin Crumpton I wouldn't be surprised if she may have learnt of his death (when and wherever that was) and felt safe to re-marry. Just one of those family mysteries.

The marriage certificate gives Benjamin as born in Kidderminster with his father named Joseph occupation weaver. That’s a nice link for me as I presume it was carpet weaving and I have visited factories there when studying textiles. Thanks for your help. Tinpot

Not sure if you know but the birth of Delia is registered with mmn Atkins (could well be mis-spelling of Adkins).

Assume you have found her baptism record.

Thanks Janice. Delia’s record also puts them in 95 Arthur Street. I think Emma Millward’s brother Edward Adkins is at that address. John is new to me and gives a new address alongside Nelly Millward to research.

Found them on 1891 census (as visitors to Edward Adkins) but, as I said, John seems to die young.
Haven't found a baptism for Nelly but will have a look.
Have you found Emma on 1901?

1901 as Emma Crumpton. Another confusion of names. Ashford/Ashwood is out of the picture by then.

In case you haven't already seen it, Tinpot. Ashford gets a couple of mentions in the Birmingham Mail.

I have found an A Millward in The Police Gazette of 11 April 1911 listed under Army Reserve as absent or deserted on the 1st October in Coventry presumably 1910. So far I have not found a military record for this person yet. Place of enlistment Warwick and trade as stamper.

I went back to the attached 1871 census today and realised that Thomas Cundy was not included in the transcrption where Ashford /Ashwood first appeared. Went on to find the second attached transcription . I think Rebecca and Edward are the siblings of Emma Adkins, my great grandmother. Also we are back in Arthur Street.
