Hi, I am tracing my family tree and in particular my gt gt grandmother Annie Payne born 1855 died 1907. She was a french polisher and had a number of shops in birmingham her husband was an upulsterer, they also owned a fish and chip shop. They had a daughter who was also a french polisher her name was Fanny Victoria Payne born 1894 died 1963. 1901 census shows her living in Aston Deritend parish of St Alban.Sadley I do not know and due to my lack of geaneology experience am having trouble finding the where abouts of the shops.
If anyone has any information on the above or can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks
S

She seems to have married into a family in the furniture trade. White’s 1873 directory lists:

1873 Payne Richard, upholsterer, 13 Hurst street

1873 Payne Thomas, chair manufacturer & furniture broker, 113½ Coleshill st & 128 Lancaster St

1873 Payne Mrs Jane & Son (Edward), cabinet makers and upholsterers, 36½ Parade

1873 Payne Mrs Louisa, french plshr. & furn. brkr. 2 Bath psg

1873 Payne Richard, furniture broker., Alma street, Aston

This presumably will be before she married. You don’t mention her husband’s name. Presumably it would be Richard or Edward ? If I know, I can follow them on further.in the directories

Sorry didn’t read the title properly, I realise now it was Richard. The following are from the PO directory/ Kellys directory, which did not list as wide a range of smaller traders, so someone (ie Richard Payne, upholdterer is not listed here, it does not necessarily mean he has gone out of business)

1876-78 Payne Richard, furniture broker, Brook house. Hunter’s lane

1879 Payne, Richard, furniture broker, Brook house. 81 Hunter’s lane (which I think is the same as Brook House)

1880-84 Payne, Richard, furniture broker, Brook house. 80 Hunter’s lane (again I am pretty sure it is the same building.)

1888-90 Payne, Richard, furniture broker, Brook house. 82 Hunter’s lane (again I am pretty sure it is the same building)

1890-92 Payne, Richard, upholsterer 3 Bath Passage

1895-1921 Payne Richard, wardrobe dealer 302 New John St West (by 1932 no 302 is not listed and Richard has gone)

1895 Payne, Annie (Mrs) upholsterer, 43 Sherlock St

1904-05 Payne Annie (Miss), furniture dealer, 243 Ladypool road, Sparkbrook

(1908 Annie has gone .there does appear Payne Annie (Mrs.), midwife, 138 Church street, Lozells., but I take it she didn’t take up a new profession)

I assume Fanny is short for Francis, Cannot find her listed.

There used to be a furniture removers called E W Payne (edith winfred) who used to be based in the Ladywood area in the early sixties.

Wow, that is an amzing response! I never expected so much information, thank you! I tried to google street view but most of them look like they have been replaced. What would you suggest now for me to find any photos of the shops?
Thanks again made my day! :)
