Allen Francis Marriage

barrie

master brummie
I have been trying, without success, to find a marriage between Francis Allen who was born in Manchester, and Mary Ann Willis who was born in Birmingham.

All their children were born in Birmingham, the earliest being born in 1854.

Francis and Mary Ann were my Gt Gt Grandparents, and any help in finding the marriage would be much appreciated.

barrie.

Hi barrie

Have looked on Ancestry and FreeBMD and i'm blowed if i can find it, i looked through 1840 to 1860 in the end, sorry.

Francis Allen Marriage

hi

Definately there as you say in the 1861 census.
Their daughter Jane was 8.
Taking the laws of average their marriage should be
around 1851/2.
searched all my records BMD ancestory etc.
No record of the Marriage.
It looks like a Church records problem. Not all
records are on file in my own case certain Family info
is not in BMD. Catholic Churches may be a problem
but they are all their in 1861 Ancestory census for
Birmingham.

Barrie I have just had a trawl through Ancestry BMD and found:

Frances Allen and Mary Ann Willis Oct Quarter 1851 Birmingham.

Frances was spelt on the register with an 'e' not 'i'.

Could you post the details of that marriage you found only i have looked and yes, both names appear but don't match and none in Birmingham.

Oh Bren you are right not thesame page number I was a bit tired when I posted but there is some confusion about the name and now the page. They are both in Birmingham though. I found both in Oct Quarter 1851 Frances XX1 (21) 447 Mary Ann XV1 (16) 496 on Free BMD Mary Ann 16 486.
What do you think? perhaps an enquiry at the register office.

I'm getting confused here folks. I looked at Mary Ann Willis marriage registered in Dec Qtr 1851 vol 16 page 447 and also Frances Allen marriage registered in Dec Qtr vol 16 page 486, but cannot find the Mary Ann Willis in 1851 vol 16 page 486.

I don't think that the two marriages are connected, what do you think?

Francis Allen Marriage

Hi

well done everybody. 1851 lines up with their first child
in 1853.
Different pages what a find pages 446 and 447.
Moma P you are a star.
Normally the pages in BMD marry up quite well
theres a pun.
I remember a lady on WM who deals with Family searches
and warns against Internet searching due to these types
of difficulties. But how else can you do it?
I have spent hours in London totally exhausted lifting those
huge books and found nothing.
The work I have done has been excellant for my friends.
Often only the Surname with the first name of the spouse
and have tracked their family in some case back to 1841.
Once again excellant work Moma P.

Hi Mike.

Can you tell me please where you get the pages 446 and 447 from?

I cannot see that connection in Momma P's reply.

Francis Allen Marriage

Hi

Sorry Moma P numbers are correct.
My mistake ouch.

Have records of the two entries
with the names on the pages. 447 and 486.

Mike

It always pays to double check because the Free BMD indexing is a bit unreliable

Mary Willis (Sep vol16 page 472) married William Sharrock ( Sep vol16 page 472)on 14th Sept 1851,St Thomas,Birmingham.

Mary Ann Willis (Dec vol 16 page 447) married Joseph Robbins(Dec vol16 page 447) on 12th October 1851,All Saints,Birmingham

Discount the Frances Allen Oct qtr 1851 Vol 16 page 486.

It was lady who married Christopher Bills 16th October 1851 St Martins, you will find them indexed

I am beginning to think that perhaps this couple , Francis and Mary did not marry.

Alberta, my thoughts exactly. I have looked to see if perhaps Mary Ann was a widow when she married Francis Allen. I have looked for a Francis Allen married to a Mary Ann of any surname, but without any success.

Have just got back to this thread after having another look at the records and i have to say i agree with Alberta, it does seem more likely they didn't marry. Like barrie i also thought there might be another marriage prior but had the same success.

I also looked for a previoius marriage without any luck, such a shame as you can learn so much from a marriage certificate.

The attempts of one and all to clear up this mystery are very much appreciated. Thank you everyone.:)
