My G Grandfather, Ernest Reginald Allen, stated that he was born at Sparkhill in 1880. His birth was not registered at GRO.
I don't really trust his word, but I have to start somewhere in my search. I need your help.
Perhaps he was baptised.
What churches were at Sparkhill at that time?
Does anyone do lookups for them?

I can't find a baptism but on the 1881 Census there is an Ernest Allen. age 2 father George, mother Ann, living at 215 Icknield Street Birmingham.

Thanks for your help - but not the one. My Ernest Reginald Allen was actually in Yorkshire in 1881 (at the age of 1). His mother had been despatched to 'the country' because she was pregnant and unmarried. She was taken in by Dr George Body, a well-known missionary zealot.
Photos of her and her family suggest a wealthy bunch who didn't want the 'shame' of a child out of wedlock.
Ernest made up his age, his 'fathers' name, and almost everything else about his life right up to his death in 1958. Every document tells a different story.
That's why I can't really believe anything I find about him.
It's a shame, because he was quite a good guy, and was awarded a gallantry medal in WW1. Why he chose to tell such porkies about his own life is a mystery.
