Alice J HERBERT/EVANS

rowan

Born a Brummie
Alice J Herbert was living at 10 back of Bristol Street in 1925.
In 1926 she married Edward F. D. Evans who later died 1929.

Were they still living in the same house at the time of their marriage?
It is known that Alice died in 1954 in Erdington.

We are trying to trace Alice's movements between 1925 and her death in 1954.

many thanks :)

Suzanne,
Thank you so very much for looking up those addresses.

This is really putting meat on the bones for us. :)

Again, thank you

Suzanne,
May I ask you to look up Thomas Arthur Guy Herbert who married Rose Martin c1922 (he is a son of Alice).

Sorry, I dont know where he would be living in Birmingham but I am certain it was in the area of Town.

In 1937 Thomas married Anne Latchford and he was living in Saltley Road.

Hi Rowan

1925 Thomas Arthur Guy Herbert lived at 11 Poplar Avenue, Summer RD, Erdington North. Also at this address is a William Griffiths

1930 Thomas Arthur Herbert and Rose Herbert 20 Great Tindall St, Ladywood Ward

1939 Thomas Arthur Guy Herbert 18 Saltley Road also an Annie Herbert

1945 Thomas A Herbert and Annie Herbert 93 St Agathas Rd, Washwood Heath

Suzanne

Wow! Suzanne......... again thank you so much. You are a star.

The picture is becoming more clear as to where and when this family moved about Birmingham. They were from London originally.

I'm here again Suzanne!!

Rose and Thomas married in 1922, had a son in 1923 and another son in 1925.

As Rose is not listed with Thomas in 1925 would she have been away in hospital? Why wasn't she listed with Thomas? :confused2:

Rowan
Don't know if these help;

In 1925 he is with William Griffiths at 11 Poplar avenue
In 1930 he is with Rose and John Austin Bromage and Ellen Bromage at 20 Great Tindal St (only listed as Thomas Arthur but with Rose)
Only listed Thomas Arthur in 1935 is with a Winifred, who he is also with in 1930
In 1939 he is living with Annie at 18 Saltley road
In 1945 he is with Annie, and Frank H.A Fearnley at no 93 St Agatha’s Road (Nearby at 304 and 305 is an Ada Latchford (mother in law ?) – there are codes QBBO/101/1 and QBBO/101/2 against the 304 and 305 respectively

Many thanks mike,
It still poses the question.........where was Rose in 1925 Why wasn't she mentioned with Thomas in that year?

Their second son Victor John was b. Apr.-June 1925 and he died 1946 age 21yrs. Did they part before Victor was born? :stare:

We know that this couple eventually divorced and Thomas married again to Annie in 1937.
The plot thickens!!

Thank you again mike for your input.

Hi Rowan

It depends how old Rose was in 1925 (under 21?) if so, not eligible to vote and I'm not too sure of exact date when women could first vote but you can easily look this up.

There is a Victor J Herbert in 1945 living at 89 Colmore Row, Market Hall Ward.

Suzanne

Victor would have been under 21 in 1945, so wouldn't have been on the electoral roll
mike

Rose was born 1903 so in 1925 she would have 22..........
where was she??

Was she with another man somewhere? This was the reason they divorced I believe

What time of the year was the Kelly's listed?

Rowan
I'm not absolutely certain, but i think that immediately after the first war when women got the vote, they initially had to be married and 21 (younger women presumably needed the expert advice of a husband) or over 30 . I think that lasted for 10 years. That would explain Rose
Mike

Mike,
Yes Ada Latchford was Thomas' mother - in law.

Can you tell me please, what the codes mean?

Ada lived at 89 St. Agatha's Road so what does 304 & 305 mean?

Apologies Rowan. i read the wrong column for Ada. She was listed at 89. the 304 and 305 were the numbers allocated on the electoral roll for them in that district. I've no idea what the Q numbers are except that the only other person with a similar note also occupies two houses in the road .Perhaps someone else can answer that question. I attach a scan of Ada's entry
Mike

Thank you for that mike.

Jane Taylor was another daughter of Ada Latchford so she had 2 of her 4 daughter's close at hand.

mike,
There were two Ada Latchford's living at no. 89 Mother and daughter, so Ada had three of her 4 daughters around her.
Could that be something to do with the codes?

Thomas Herbert lived with some Italians during the years between 1934 and 1937 believed to be in Coleshill Street.

Their name were Sarracine (not sure if that is the correct spelling).
Will Thomas show up in Kelly's for when he was living there?

He worked with them when The QE hospital was being built.

again, many thanks for your help.

Kellys only shows the owner or main occupier of the property (and often doesn't show either), so wouldn't show thomas and sarracine. In the 1937 directory there is
Saracine Elsie Florence (Mrs.), coffee rms. 28 Garrison la 9
In the 1935 electoral roll there is John and Mabel Saracine at 16 Chatwell grove, but only they are listed at that address. The birmingham library will have the electoral roll for other years around 1935 and this might show thomas there
