Alcester Lane End Alcester Lane South

Ian FOFB

Brummie yes ! Novice no !
Found an old postcard of Alcester Lane End. Not fully sure where it is / was but Googling seems to throw up that it is now Alcester Road South. I've trawled on Google StreetView but cannot find anything that fits the bill today, there appears to be a large pub by where the tram is. There are several buildings that are likely candidates but I think that most of this scene has been demolished .

The pub is still there and is called the Kings Arms, I understand it is being renamed,it's known to locals as the Knob, due to the shape of the road where the trams used to turn

A couple of shots off Street View,

I’m not sure if the term Alcester Lane End is used today. These two images identified it in the past, and the buildings are recognisable today. The former post office in the colourised image is now a florist at the junction of Alcester Road South and Woodthorpe Road. The B&W photo shows the corner of Taylor Road. Viv

It is my guess that it was the trams destination that gave it the name Alcester Lanes End. There were no commas in the tram destination as far as I remember. The colour photo shows a tram belonging to the Corporations predecessor hence the colour.

Alcester Lanes end was the terminus for Birmingham Corporation buses...by Kings Heath greyhound racing track....pub opposite always known as The Knob , no matter name outside

Behind the tram is #284 Alcester Lanes End, once Joseph Harris dry cleaners. The Tge sign for the flats has now gone. This is next to the Crown/Kings Arms pub. If this was a tram stop at this point, it must have later been moved (for buses) to outside the pub.
