Addison Road Corner Shop B14

Pretoria

New Member
Hi all,

I was hoping somebody would have more information about the Corner Shop/ Grocery store on the corner of Addison Road and Goldsmith Rd.

I have seen the thread about the church which was really great to see.

I know the shop was called Pretoria Stores, have seen the beautiful old photo. I know about Mr Sealey and his work as a preacher! I have also seen a photo of him, in the shop at the end of sugar rationing.

I believe the addison road frontage also housed a barbers at some point, but don't know much more than that.

I also know its last function as a business property was to house the Bearings Comp.
I would love to see any more photos that might exist and to hear more about the buildings history.
Would also be interesting to know what the shop premises was on the opposite side of the junction which was more recently a grocery shop and is now up for sale/rent!

Thank you in advance
Kind regards.

The building on the opposite corner seems to have been highly altered, and I am not sure how much is original, but it is no 89 Addison Road. In the very early years of the road there is no numbering in Kellys. However in the 1900 Kellys (which would refer to 1899) the shop is occupied by Thomas Rigby Onions, grocer, and he is also there a year earlier (when the buildings were not numbered). Earlier there is a grocer, Alfred Evans and provision dealer in about the same position who is probably in the same shop, but, as it is not numbered this is only likely, not absolutely certain

The Pretoria stores seem to have been built around 1907 (or perhaps a year or so earlier,) and were originally Arthur Hall, hardware dealer

Thank you very much mikejee! Fantastic. Yes sorry, it is 89 Addison Rd, could have said that.

Member Phil posted a great Photo in another thread with the shop in it and now TR Onions makes sense!
I will repost.
Great to hear about previous inhabitants.
The last picture was uploaded on to a website called Pintest by a lady called Dorothy Curley.

Any ideas about how I could find more information about the property & it’s history gratefully received!
Thanks Again mikejee!
