Benjamin Ackrill was my grandmothers first husband. Just had some information that in 1922 he lived at 12 Longbridge Lane Northfield. Can anyone tell me was this a hospital, sanatorium or asylum. Quite curious.
 
The 1921 Birmingham Kellys has no numbering for Longbridge Lane , but contains no hospital or the like. Maps of that time show the only buildings on that side of the road very close to the junction with Bristol Road South (around where no 12 would be) as associated with a largish building near the corner labelled Longbridge House. Longbridge house is listed in the 1921 Kellys as on Bristol Road South as belonging to Arthur.S.Dales, farmer. Presumably no 12 would be one of the minor building associated with the house. The electoral roll for 1920 similarly does not list any numbers for the lane, though does list 5 people at Longbridge house.
 
The 1922 e roll lists Benjamin Ackrill at 12 but not Longbridge Lane. It is 12 Smithfield Street, Deritend. It looks as if it might have been a lodging house as there are 9 men + the house owner and I assume his wife. I should add it is mis-transcribed on Ancestry as 12 Longbridge!

yes jan i would say that john and alice atkins were owners of the house and husband and wife...

On the 1911 census (first info I found) 12 Smithfield Street has 17 occupants. A husband and wife listed as manager and manageress of "coffee house", 2 waitresses at the coffee house + 13 men (listed as lodgers).

Thank you for sorting that out, I actually lived near Longbridge Lane and it's nice to see a bit of history even though the original transcribers mixed it up a bit.
