Accountants

master brummie
I have been searching for years for Accountants with connections to my Blackham/Hayward families. I found the following on the 1881 census on Family Search - by accident.
George Blackham b. 1825 Handsworth is a widower (wife Eliza) living at Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield with d. Martha age 11.
W.G. Blackham (Walter George) b. 1850 is living at 118 Westminster Rd. Handsworth with family - he is a Public Accountant - he's George's son.
Next door at 120 westminster Rd. is a family of younger Blackham children with Catherine age 24 as the head. I think they ? probably George's children.
I wonder if someone can look them up in a directory. I would be grateful for any information that can connect them to the furniture trade.
Many thanks
Sheri

I jave only looked between 1880 and 1890. Could find no furniture connection . The other occupants of exchange chambers and Arcade chambers are nothing to do with furniture. On the other hand we don’t know what the mercantile agency handled
Can look at later or earlier dates if required

Hi Mike, I'm sorry I haven't replied before - not had my computer on for a few days. Thank you so much for the information. I
feel there is a connection with my Blackham/Hayward family somewhere!! But the above Blackham family was obviously educated whereas my line were Blacksmiths and nail makers. My gt.grandfather Henry b.1835 was still a blacksmith in 1881.
The mystery is Henry's daughters all became French Polishers and one son an upholsterer. I found all the marriages for my gt. aunts except one Emily b.1860 - the family story is that one ran off with the accountant of the company!! and took all the company money which nearly caused them to go out of business. Now I know (sorry to repeat myself) my g.parents and parents got their furniture (which was v.good) through the family. My brother thin ks the accountant was a Hayward (Henry's wife was Elizabeth Hayward), this was between 1881 and 1891 census. Emily was never heard of again ever. After reading your information I feel there is a connection with these two Blackham families and with Handsworth (Henry's father John was married there). Mike I really appreciate your help with my little mystery. If you could look either before 1881 and after 1891. It's very kind of you of you to take the time to help and I appreciate it.

Hi Mike, Thank you very much for all the information - its very kind of you. I certainly have plenty of Georges to look at don't I.
Can you tell me Mike is West Bromwich near to Handsworth? I realise Handsworth was a village in the 1800's - was West Brom. I didn't know that area.
Many thanks,
Sheri

Yes Sheri West Bromwich was/is fairly close to Handsworth. In the late 1800s Handsworth was almost attached to Birmingham. If you went in a straight line from West brom to Birmingham, you would about pass through Handsworth. I would think the distance between the two was about 4 miles. The attached map from a 1855 directory shows the area
Mike

Hi Mike, Thank you for the map and the information - I thought it was faily close to Handsworth. I thi nk I should look more into Staffordshire records. You've been very kind in helping so much.
Sheri

Yes I certainly think you should. I have access to very few Staffs directories, and th e problem is that outside the big cities you have to search for every single town individually. However the only Blackhams I have found in west Brom in these few years are Levi, shopkeeper in 1872 and 1880; John, linendraper in 1904, John, shopkeeper and william thomas .printer in 1924 and 1940. nothing in 1861
mike

Hi Mike, I have connected James the Farmer with George the accountant - I'm fairly sure they are brothers - the one I want to connect with them is John b.1795 Blacksmith - he may have come from West Brom - he's so elusive!!!!
Thank you very much,
Sheri

Sheri, Wrong christian name for one ,but:
Pigotts 1835 Staffs directory, West Bromwich section
BLACKSMITHS.
Blackham Thos. (jobbing) High st
Whites 1851 Staffs Directory,West Bromwich section
37 Blackham John, sad iron handle mkr.
(The 37 meant that the person was in Swan Village,West Bromwich)
Mike

Thanks Mike very much but my John Blackham according to 1841 census was born in 1795/6 and is li ving at 35? Vale St. which I think was in the centre of B'ham where he is making nails, he's still there in 1851. It's kind of you to perserver - I've been trying all afternoon to make a connection - nothing.
