Overturned Tram sent in by Jackie Perry

One such accident, date unknown, and a unrelated Newspaper cutting.

Rod, your first newspaper cutting is from the days of steam trams - before 1904 - as it specifically refers to the engine and the car. There was a similar accident in 1940 to electric car 714, which was due to a brake failure (very unusual on Birmingham Tramways) at the bottom of Park Road by the parish church - I can just remember it.The battered car was righted on the tracks again and towed across the town to the Sampson Road paint shops in Small Heath, where it was stored until 1945, when it was broken up.
The picture you show is quite a different kettle of fish - that's a London electric double-decker on its side.

Rod, your second press cutting dates to 1907, when the brakes on car 22 were not powerful enough to keep it in check at the bottom of Warstone Lane, on the bend into Hingeston Street as the tracks crossed Icknield Street. That was a fatal accident, and because of that, the cars running on the Lodge Road route were fitted withan extra Maley brake, but were still running until 1947.

Here is a picture of the Tram accident 1st Oct 1907, info states tram overturned when brakes failed and as the tram gathered speed a lot of the passengers were injured who jumped off

Just been looking into records of the tram accident in Soho Road. Found two very different stories, one being that it was South Staffs Co. car 46 licensed to use Corporation tracks to Snow Hill Station, and that the accident took place on 26 June 1916 on the Holyhead Road, just past the New Inns [C A Mayou, 1974]. The other is that it took place on 22 June to the same car, running nearly full from Darlaston, and jumping the rails just before Soho Road station and drifting in towards the kerb until it overturned [J S Webb, 1976]. Although the first date is probably correct, the second description has the right location - you can see the entrance to the old Soho Road station in the background. I remember my dad telling me that a company car overturned there - he lived in Grasmere Road, and this was his local tram stop, but he would have been only about seven at the time.
One thing you can see is that the paintwork of the tram was immaculate, but it was wartime, and the mechanical condition of the car must have been faulty. After that incident insisted on a mechanical inspection of all the cars 'licensed' to run in the city, which they hadn't done before.

Trams

Hi, Rod. Not specifically related to your pic, but my dad, now sadly deceased used to tell us of a story when he was a lad (he was born in 1907) he saw a boy decapitated by a tram on Salford Bridge. Anybody have any information on this? Thanks.

Boy Killed by Horse & Cart in Birmingham

Hello everyone,

I have just come into contact with a relative (in Autralia) of my Aunty, brother to my grandad.

This contact tells me that his Gran, my aunt, witnessed an accident when one of my g/fathers brothers was killed by a horse and cart in Birmingham.
She would have only have been young at the time, b1886 moved to Australia in 1912 so I would think somewhere around the turn of the century for her to be able to recall it.

I feel sure it would have made the newspapers but not being sure of the date it will take a while. Have been googling but nothing yet.

I have been reading the reports on here about tram accidents and wonder if anyone could recall seeing anything like this in the cuttings while doing their research.
The family name is FELLOWS, yes it's me again.

Thanks

Derek

Derek have you tried looking for a death date on https://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ This may give you and idea or exact date of when to search. Then you would have to visit Central Library and look at the newspapers on Micro Film. Also you may find a coroners report at the library.

Thanks for your reply,

I have been trying to narrow down the first name as it is not known, but I do know that two survived the war etc. so it narrows it down to Frederick I think, and working the way they did them nameing sons after fathers etc, my father was given this same name by his father so may ahve been in recognision of Grandads brother.
Will try that route first.
Thanks again.

Derek

My Dad's brother was killed in an accident involving a tram on Great Lister Street not sure of the date might have been in the 1920's or 30's.Any further info would be appreciated.

Hi all , i seem to remember that when they were turning the Kingstanding rd into a dual carraigeway , one of the workers was killed whilst working in a whole where the walls collapsed , and in 1966 i myself was run over outside the cottages between the Hare and Hounds and the news agents , does anyone remember these events , it would be great to hear from the people in the cottages who took me in prior to the ambulance arriving ?
