Hi

My grandfather, A. M. Smith, ran a chemists and opticians in Alum Rock just before WWII, possibly in Alum Rock Road. The shop received a direct hit from a bomb during the war, so will not be listed any later.
Much family history was lost, but fortunately the inhabitants had already relocated to the new shop in School Road, Hall Green. I would like to know where the previous shop was, if someone could help with a lookup.

Thanks

Roger

Your father seems to have had both shops for a short period of time, as he is listed as 170 Alum rock road and 174 School road in 1935-37, but had gone from alum rock road by 1938. In 1933 the chemist in Alum Rock Road was Algernon W.Tunnicliffe,
The position of the shop is shown in red on the map. I think that you can see the present building at https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=alum+rock+road+birmingham&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.240319,38.803711&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Alum+Rock+Rd,+Birmingham,+West+Midlands+B8,+United+Kingdom&ll=52.489106,-1.851781&spn=0.000769,0.002368&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=52.489215,-1.852109&panoid=lnvhkprAtQCda9Ll_ZQMsQ&cbp=12,34.61,,0,2.73 . You will see that this and the three buildings to the right have a different roofline, and these were presumably all destroyed by the bomb (I would guess)
Mike
