A cracking photo

I had wondered how canal ice was cracked. The answer is here. The men would stand in the boat rocking it from side to side like this:

As a 'young-un' I saw ice cracking being done on the Tame Valley canal, we were skating and sliding at the time, so we were not best pleased.
I remember the ice soon refroze all lumpy and we couldn't skate anymore.

Just caught up with your post B.E The canals are a world apart aren't they, there is something magic about them. Thanks for sharing the old photo's.
