Hi all, I am not sure how to go about this but I have a book that was presented to a ancestor of mine in 1853 with an inscription that included the address 88 Queens Road, Aston, Birmingham. The Book was take on her voyage to NZ. I have a name of the person that presented it but it is difficult to read. I would like to find the record of who owned the house or at least live there at that time? Is anyone able to help? Ange

Welcome to the forum.
Are you able to scan in the name so we can have a look and perhaps make some guesses?

The address is very clear in the book: 88 Queens Road, Aston, Birmingham. a bit later 1853 - hand written and dated
could you give us the name of your ancestor and when she was born please as the more info you can supply may help us to help you in your research..we do have a queens road in aston

May not be relevant but for the record. In 1894 the Queen's Hotel in Queen's Street was used for the Aston Manor Literary and Debating Society.

`sorry - I did miss understand. Mary Dorothea FLAMANK and I have just realised that the date in the book is 1883.

thanks ..i thought 1853 was a bit early for queens road aston which is still there although all the old houses are now gone..however if you use the search box i think we have a thread for queens road with some old photos on it

In 1881 Mary Dorothea Flamank is listed as living on Lichfield Road, Castle Church Staffordshire.
In fact she seems to have been born and lived in Stafford.

thanks jan...also in 1891 dorothys parents and siblings are still living in stafford in 1891 so no idea why dorothy would be at 88 queens road aston in 1883..noticed you found in Kelly's directory for 1883 a John Charlton at 88 Queens Road...wonder what he did for a living...trying to find him on the 1881

Martin John Whiting was a builder/mason from Gloucestershire. His marriage was registered in Bham that appears to be the only reference to him in the area. His wife and children are in Alcester on the censuses but he is in various places.

88 Queens Road does not seem to be on the 1881 census it jumps from 78 to 106

In Kelly's 1883

1879 directory does not contain a Queen's Road so I suspect that the houses were built between then and 1881 - it may be that 88 was built after the 1881 census. Perhaps Martin John Whiting was working as a mason/builder on the properties. That does not, however, explain his link to Mary Famank.

Question - was the book definitely presented to Mary? Or was it presented to someone else and later given to Mary?
We can only see the words "presented by Martin John Whiting"in post #8.

The 1884 Kellys does not list no 88. The 1882 directory lists Aston separately as a suburb, with no separate street section, only a list of names, but 88 does not seem to be listed , though other buildings in the street are

Just wondering how the address features in the inscription. Does it suggest Mary lived there or the presenter (Martin Whiting)?

At least 3 of Mary's siblings had marriages registered in Aston and her father appears to be buried at Witton (1888). He has a probate on which his address is listed as 241 Park Road.

An elder sister was living on Albert Road in 1881.

Mary's brother was a photographer and there are lots of mentions of him in the newspapers. Her sister (Mabel Botwood) was a journalist and she gets some mentions also and on 25 Nov 1882 the birth of her daughter is mentioned and the address given seems to be Queens Road, don't know if there's a number.

The daughter of Mabel Botwood mentioned above was baptised 15 Dec 1882 - Elizabeth Agnes - and if she was living on Queens Road then this may give a house number.
