Hi There,

My family lived at the above address on the 1891 census a Mr John Glew sometimes spelt Glen,
I believe he ran some kind of furniture business just wanted to know if anyone has anymore information or photos they could share with me.

Thanks Cath

Hi Cath, The Kelly's Directory for 1892 has Gt Hampton Street, (west side) Glew, Jn, furn. removr.
EDIT.. also there in 1897 through to 1908. By 1913 it was Newbury's Limited, furniture removers

If the numbering is going the right way, then I suppose 67-68 could be the second and third from the left on this photo.

The directories are a bit vague , but i think it is certain that either 66 or 67-68 are the first buildings coming back from Vyse st on the west side. there is a picture in David Harveys book on Hockley who says it is 68, but, as it is on the corner of Vyse St I feel he must be mistaken as to the number

Hi, Ive just been looking at Google maps and comparing todays position of 68 & 67 with an 1889 map and kellys. I agree with Mike about the numbers having discussed this stretch of street with him before on a number further along the street. In the kelly's for 1900 66 is Cohens, Isreal, Wholesale Jewellers, 67 & 68 is John Glew and 69& 70 is Proctors, William, Wholesale jewellers as seen on the sign in the Phils photograph #5.
I think the numbers are the same today as they would have been back then.
Here are some pictures of what 67 & 68 looks like today (couldnt get a very good angle Im afraid)

Gt Hampton Street 1889 a.jpg 67 and 68 Gt Hampton Street.jpg Gt Hampton Street aa.jpg 67 is Digicell and 68 is Warley Cash and Carry

Additional Info....John Glew was also at the same address in 1883 (so about 1883 to 1908 ish) In 1881 he appears to be in an "unnumbered house" in Vauxhall Street with his mother and family.

Mossg thank you for posting the photos on the 1881 census my great grandparents and family Richard & Elizabeth Birch were living at 65 Gt. Hampton Street, he was a fishmonger, and most of his daughters went on to run fish & chip shops, I think it must be where the Vegetarian Restaurant is shown. We tend to think Veg. Restaurants are a fairly new idea, this seems to prove otherwise.

Hi
Just a update on John Glew and Great Hampton Street the business was started in 1859, he had a number of warehouses on broad street, gem street and Barr street I have found out from newspaper articles online.
John died in March 1908 in Fulham the business carried on until Feb 1911 when the company John Glew & Co Ltd went into liquidation . Does anybody know if/how I could find any photos I could add to my family research
