Hi all

Could anyone explain to me the meaning of the address 4 house, 1 Court?

My family are registered there on the 1881 census.

kat courts or court yards if you like were numbered... each court held so many houses the amount of houses in each court varied...some courts were larger than others....your rellies lived in court no 1 house no 4

The old maps site is playing up this evening. will get you one as soon as I can

I am glad I am not the only one finding the map site playing up. I keep getting blank maps! Hope it gets sorted soon.

I thought at first it was the browser, as sometimes I can't get anything other than blank screen oh chrome, but it works on other browsers, but its the same for all of them this evening

Afraid I have not succeeded. I assume that the reference is an early one (pre 1880), as on the c1889 map below I cannot find a court 1. Court 2 is marked in red and the courts are numbered consecutively going south down the north west side of the road, so it must have been on the same side, north of court 2. There is one unnamed court which has 3 houses on it, though they might have been listed as back 1,2,3 rather than as a court. Or else the court may have been built over

But that's great Mikejee, it's a look at what the streets were like around the time that my family were there, and it's always interesting to see the maps anyway. Thanks for looking and for attaching the map of 1889.
