Started school in 1953..
First school Church Road Yardley...remember waiting for a coach to collect
us all, corner of Ragnall Avenue And the Radleys...Only real memory of
Church Rd is The sycamore trees, and therefore the helicopters, the seeds falling from the trees, it was obviously autumn .
Oh Yes! and the open air toilets on the far side of the playground, boy! did they wiff....an' it weren't 'arf cold on the ole winky!!!
Only there for a very short time.
Elms Farm Infants opened, we were the first intake, that would be possibly in the late spring early summer of 1954...
My memory being hoards of us stood outside waiting for the doors to be opened for the first time( somewhat late I seem to remember), with all our parents hanging on to us, the noise - chatter sheer bedlam..
Lads in blue gaberdene macks, long socks with a double blue band around the tops( held up with nicker elastic-remember those?) Above which were our grey flannel shorts...Shorts 'eckers like they hung past me bl***y
knees..." they'll do 'im for next year"..Ha! Ha!
Peaked caps with "the badge"....
The girls with brimmed hats, similar gaberdene macks, only difference being girls buttoned to the right hand side, grey skirts and white socks.
Everyone looked totally pristine..New school - new look..thinking back our parents must of spent a fortune to turn us out looking like
"Bl***y shop window Manikins"......Ha! Ha!
On a serious note money was tight back then, but new school , fairly new houses even then, parents not wishing to be out done.. I don't know..
but for once in our lives we looked as clean and pristine as our new school.
With...Inside Toilets......
From there, on whilst at the infants the junior school was being built,on
tother side..so thats where we went...
My greatest memory while there, well believe it or not....a group of us were taught, by a certain teacher Mr Williamson...Okay! Okay!

I'm getting there.....
Did I mention.......

Scottish dancing...yup!...All the different reels... four of us Yup! me included..
To do the sword dancing, Maypole day there we were out on the play
ground, parents -teachers - dignatry the whole cabooodle ect..
Raise arms (deers antlers) and The steps, toe pointing with the other foot
at the rear of the opposite calf...( I'm pretty sure the step was called the Podobar or something-spelling maybe wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong)
They were great years ,everything was so new, fresh , exciting...
come on speak up...be honest tell your memories... were you at Elms FARM ? Do you Remember Mrs Cowley( Head Mistress of the junior) ?

Whats more do you remember the infamous Scottish dancers....an what happened next, during the sword dance.....

I... know... I...was... that lad....answers on a postcard please..ha! HA! Ha!....how the heck do I get them da mmmm icons to work.....
Bye ..Paul

I'll move onto the comprehensive school another time.....

Blimey Paul. You've got a good memory. 1954. Well I know I was 8 and thats about it. Early alziemers I think. My husband came from Flavells lane in Yardley, but can't remember which school he went to. He's older than me poor soul, bless him. Good to read your memories though. What was your name again?
Lynda

Actually Paul, he now says he did go to the same school. but was probably a bit older than you. He asks, was Mr Williamson the PE master as well? If so, he says that when playing rugby, he did as he was instructed and tried to bring the man with the ball down. Because it was the P.E. teacher himself, he knocked seven bells out of him, as was the ilk in those days. Wouldn't get away with it now.
Happy days
Lynda

Could well have been Lynda...big tall fella..scottish decent...remember him occassionally teaching rugby... my recollection was on the side play field playing
cricket, bent down to do me lace up, Williamson bellowed out " Turn and face the other way lad", shot over spun me round to face the other way saying " the so and so ball could hit your head stupid boy! "
Bet you know/guessed what happened . B****** Ball hit me right where the sun don't shine....that bought tears to me eyes
I can tel Ya'

Bye Paul.. I can feel it now.....
