Hi there, I'm new to this and hopefully have found the right place to ask.

I'm looking for any details on the marriage of THOMAS TOWNSEND to ANN SWAIN
(16 MAY?) 1822, at St Martins, there is a possibilty that Ann might be Anna or Hannah. Any info at all is important to me.

Many thanks for any help at all.

Thanks for the reply Ray, Is I.G.Is. the LDS website? I think thats where I found it, but thought it was best to question the date in case it was out.

To explain further why I'm hoping to pick up any clues,

My G-Grandfather was 'Frederick Swain Townsend' and was known as such in living memory, But we have family records of him originally (and occasionally) using "Frederick George Townsend" (his fathers name.) His grandfather was Thomas Townsend, born in Great Alne 1806 and married to Hanna/Anna. At some point between then and 1826 (see below) he came into Brum,

The 'Swain' bit has always been a bit of a mystery, this wedding if 'the one' could offer a possible solution.. The eldest child of Thomas's family that I've found so far is 1826, 'Aston' born so... well its a a possible!

Thanks again,

Trev

on the record 16th may 1822 at st. martins it was definitely ANN swain and thomas townsend and they both signed their names (rather than put a cross). they were bachelor and spinster of this parish, and the witnesses were john townsend and elizabeth swain.

have looked at the baptisms

on 19 sep 1825 they had two children christened

maria daughter of john and ann townsend temple street weaver born. 10.5.1823

jane daughter of john and ann townsend temple st. weaver b. 9.1.1825

sorry please disregard this as i was thinking it was john and ann when it should have been thomas and ann (what a twit)!!

Haha! you did confuse me there!! Thank you for the other info though Shera. I worry that I might be trying to make it fit a little much because it would be a solution to why Frederick adopted the name Swain and I've drawn zilch on any other Thomas/Hanna Townsend marriages at the time. Our family has a long history on all sides in Deritend, so thought this might be it. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

BTW, The first child was born Mary ann (c)1926.

This is the first time that I've attempted pre 1837, so I guess there's not a lot of other info there?

best wishes,

Trev

sorry trev i cant find anything else that fits. i do certainly agree with you that usually when there is an unusual name put in the middle it is the mothers or grandmothers maiden name.

BTW im not the only one making mistakes. you put 1926 instead of 1826

:D:D:D

Maybe they took a while to get started!!! :D

My Thomas and Hannah/Anna were born in 1806, so if it was them they would only have been 16 in 1822. would they have had to have permission or more info if that were the case, or was that the 'norm'? seems a long way from home for Thomas at least, maybe times were different but I'm doubting it now.

Thank you again both,

Trev

i think what i would do is get one of the birth certificates of the children born after 1837 so that you will have the mothers maiden name on it :)

didnt you say the first child was born in 1826, that would have made them 20, but i suppose you mean the marriage. 16 does seem young but i have seen it before occasionally.

You're totally right, I've jumped the gun and need to back-track to get it. Thank you, will let you know how I get on and probably be back for more advice if you can bear it!

best wishes, and thanks again! :)
