Hi

Need help please in deciphering hand writing for occupations marked with x
Have looked hard and long and getting nowhere, so I think its time to call in a few more pairs of eyes.

1901 census
RG/2823
Filio 117
In two parts, page 39/40

Family,
Simeon Bates, b1852 and Ellen Bates, b1856
Birth Place, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.

Transcribe error; Simeon bates shown as Duncan Bates on 1901 census search

Thanks David

David,
My eyes detect certain words.

In the first line I detect the word 'Maker'

In the second line - last word 'domestic'

In the third line - middle word 'mineral'

Hope I have not confused things and hope others may make a connection with my suggestions

Hi David

I have had a look at the original as sometimes you can compare the wrighting.

1, Spring Maker

2, Groom Domestic

3, Carter in Mineral Water Work.

4, Turner.

Hope this helps.

Occupation help

Hi

Thank you all for your quick response, but the first prize must go to Moma p, you are brill, once you’re told what it is, it becomes so clear, thanks Moma P.
I know where to come next time I have the same prob.

Moma p, I see you were born in Handsworth, I was also born in Handworth in 1950 at number 70 Alexandra rd just off Queenshead rd, happy days.

Thanks Again, David

Sorry to have missed the point earlier.

The word after "Carter in Mineral Water" - could it be "Drinks"?

The description of "Turner" also appears to have mention of "Fitter". Is it "Fitter/Turner"? There seems to be something after it too.

Nobody has commented on the reference to "Worker". Could someone experienced in examining Census returns tell me the significance of that term, please? Should be interested to know. It seems pretty redundant in view of the more precise descriptions of occupation. Is it an indication of social status? Or current employment status? What is the heading of the column?

Chris

Hi Chris

I think the part where it says worker after the occupation tells you if the person was an employer or someone of working class, i.e. working for someone else.
I have sometimes seen under occupation, Employer employing 5 workers or own means.
Hope this helps and if anyone knows different please chip in.

David

The reference to "worker" would indicate that they were employed by someone else, other entries in that column would be "employer" or "own account"
