Hi Steffan, I was born above the bakers at 35 High St Saltley just before the war started. Dad kept the bakers open all through the war. I was evacuated for a few months but returned home early in 1940 just as the bombing started!! We shared the cellar with Arthur Wallis the green grocer when...

Its easy to forget that there was more rationing after the war than during hostilities. Meat had always been on ration but bread wasn't rationed until around 1947 - 1949

Thanks so much for displaying the photo of the bakers shop where I was born. It brings back so many memories around the war time when the area was under threat of bombing at the "Met" who were making Tanks. Do you know the date of the photo?

Dennis and Devon Boy, I never had many direct dealings with Tom Rogers so have no complaints. Dai Thomas was the most aggressive teacher with Buckley for french a close second. However even today I have a guilty conscience about how we treated Sos Holingsworth who was stone deaf from his...

I left in 1956 and remember most of the names, including pupils. I am next to 'Sam' Dodd and 'Monty' Meason and we all left that year.

Hello johnfc, I vaguely remember the Penguin Cafe at the start of Washwood Heath Rd. We used to supply them with Cakes and bread rolls in the 50' and 60's. We supplied many of the small corner shops around Saltley, Nechells and Duddeston as well as Cafes like the Penguin. I particularly remember...

I think the fishing tackle shop was run by Jimmy Chaplin. He was next door to our bakery. He did a lot of dealings in war surplus material after the war and got a lot bigger. He had a big american car around 1948-9 and it caused quite a stir parked in High St!

After the war we moved to Great Barr but dad kept the bakery going into the 1970's. We used to have drink in the Tilt Hammer on Saturday lunchtimes after all the baking was finished. There was an off licence on the corner of Adderly Rd and High St. I can remember Bentleys the Taylor, a watch...
