Bierton Road Junior and Infants School

Hi Mick Bryan (CrikeyMickey)! I recall Mr. Williams, whom I found like able, but Mr. Lanyon’s science ‘lessons’ I found dreary. Reading the same general science book for my four years with only one science experiment a year was not my idea of learning. I usually came last or near last at the...

    Lozells St Primary School

Miss Darlington was a gifted storyteller. Even those children who were often badly behaved would sit enthralled listening to her stories which she related at the end of the day. She never read her fascinating stories from a book, relying on her memory: it added more of a dramatic effect. Later...

    Aston childhood

I don’t think ‘Mom’ is ‘a Birmingham thing.’ My youngest sister in law, now living in America, calls her mother (my mother in law), ‘Mom,’ when speaking English, but my mother in law, like my sister in law, are of an Ethiopian background and both were born in Ethiopia

    Archbishop Williams Tile cross 1960 - 64

We had a family by the name of Thompson living next door to us- Lyttelton Road . One of the family- a son of the owners was ‘John.’ His sister was Beryl and the father was a self employed carpenter. Whilst the John I am thinking of was born in the 1930’s thereabouts, could he/ they be any...

Hi Jim Green Lane baths were in Small Heath. My maternal grandmother had a cafe there at the turn of the 20th century. Aston swimming baths (I recall using them) were on Victoria Road, Aston.

Bierton Road Junior and Infants School

Hi ! I was sorry to see Vic ( ‘Skip’ as group scoutmaster) was not so close to his own family. I knew he retired to Tunbridge Wells, because in replying to me he informed me of that and made a veiled reference to the fact that he’d ‘had enough.’ I also recall him mentioning that he’d been a...

Bierton Road Junior and Infants School

As both your husband and I were born in 1944, it’s possible we were in the same class ! I recall David Smart and David Cartwright- at least, I think I’ve got the first names correct. Certainly I know I’m correct with the surnames. In those days, boys couldn’t step over the demarcation line for...

I'm sorry I don't have any photos of the shop, but I do remember being a little afraid of her as a young child! I also remember she had a number of large jars of boiled sweets.I used to sometimes buy sherbet dips, sweet cigarettes, sweet matches and wagon wheels and liqourice from her.

    Lozells Street

As I lived in Wills Street, I knew Lozells Street very well. In fact, I was a pupil at Lozells Steet School. I remember a sweet shop, which was owned by an elderly lady, on the corner of Wills Street and Lozells Street. Is that the shop you are referring to?

    Wright's Rope Works

My father worked at Wright's Rope Works during the 1940's and also,I think, the 1930's. I did have a photograph of him at work there but, sadly, it was lost about fifteen years ago. He was a 'splicer.' Sorry I couldn't supply more information.
