    Golden Lion Cannon Hill

This showed up on the Heritage Week Events this year https://birminghamheritageweek.co.uk/event/golden-lion-cannon-hill-park/ As you can't safely go in to the building, everything's outside but it's a history of the Golden Lion with something on what they plan on doing with it in future if they...

    Birmingham museum and art gallery.

They charge to visit the special exhibitions (Gas Hall/Water Hall) but they're all that's open at the moment. There's a date for opening the whole thing (late October) but nothing is said about admission fees.

    Birmingham Surrealists

Something else that might be of interest https://www.desmond-morris.com/ There was a TV documentary a few years back calling him "The last of the surrealists" - he was the last of the Birmingham group still alive - and there are clips of various things available on the site. There's nothing on...

    Varna Road

A few years back there was an exhibition of photgraphs at a local gallery of pictures taken by an American student centred on one woman who lived on Varna Road in the 60s. Not all of the pictures are of Varna Road but some are. Here is some detail about the story...

    Radio

I may have said this before but this link should find you a lot of old radio shows. https://www.radioechoes.com/?page=series_all It's not perfect. Part of the problem is that they like the original title of the show rather than what you remember it as. For examp;le, this is in the T's on the...

    Birmingham History Fair

Since this is an image scanned from a flyer what appears to be a link to midland ancestors shop will not work and there's no way of telling the web address. For those who think of going note that the word "King" is one line down from where it should actually be.

Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

For what it's worth I ised to go to IT trade shows at the NEC back in the 90s. At one point Dr Solomon was there running his stand and I may have talked to him. Trouble was that in those days the internet was still dial-up and the computers I was dealing with were mostly dumb terminals that had...

    Birmingham museum and art gallery.

For what it's worth there's a site that lists events at the various museums and galleries at https://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/ I don't know if your membership gets you in to paid events but it should show what's open somewhere if it's got that bad.

Birmingham District Amateur Football Association medal

If nothing else, this thread should show more detail. https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/threads/bham-works-amateur-football-association.47138/ It also has shinier versions of the medals from different years.

    Computer Help Please.

Almost everything described could also be down to a fault with the internet connection. If that's the problem check that the relevant plugs haven't come loose and if you have a powered box that everything comes through, you might want to try switching it off, waiting a minute, and switching it...

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16.7&lat=52.46508&lon=-1.88225&layers=175&b=3&o=100 The above link should take you to a map from the turn of the (19th/20th) century. If I've got this right you should see the goods station at the top with a web of different lines going off the main one. At...

Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

I tried looking for details on the Lidl laptop scam recently and came up with this page. Did you know Which run a standard scam alert page? https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/the-latest-scam-alerts-from-which-aBRLy2b02WkC

    computer help

I live in a sheltered housing block. One of the residents buys stuff from amazon on a regular basis but they leave the packages just inside the door to the block rather than take it up to her flat on the second floor.

    Electric Cinema Station Street

It's a while since I've been in there. I think it's been closed for long periods of time between owners several times in my life and probably quite a few before that. Apparently it's been mostly rebuilt a few times and, obviously, they've entirely changed the furniture since I was last there. I...

    Varna Road

This is the full listing from the voter's register for 103 Varna from 1951 to 1955. Something must have changed in 1951 because that list is named 1951-2 whereas all the others are just a single year. 1951-52 Bartlett, Frank J Bartlett, Lily Brien, Timothy J Brien, May Tattum, David G Tattum...

    Varna Road

Had to go into the centre of town today so I looked this up. John H Edwards is listed in both 1953 & 1954. I'd guess there were 4 or more flats since most of the time from 51-55 there are 3 married couples and up to two singles. In 1955 It's down to the Bartletts and one other.

    Varna Road

Best guess if this JH Edwards was a hairdresser and lived at 103 Varna is that this was a rooming house and he was one of the tenants amd that he was employed as a hairdresser by someone with a shop or did this at the client's home. He'd be invisible to the directory in that case. The only way...

    Varna Road

1952 Kelly's lists 103 Varna rd as Bartlett Jn (no profession so it's probably residential rather than commercial). There is one Edwards Jn Hy but he's at 75 Wychall Rd Northfield. There are other John Edwards's (see attached). There is no Hairdresser named Edwards listed in the Trade section...

    Radio

Variations on the "pirate radio" idea happen from time to time. There was a resurgence of small area limited hours stations in the 90s as part of rave culture and a few other things. There was a TV parody of this situation a few years back. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_Just_Do_Nothing...
