Dad's grandparents Mary & John Brasnell lived in Hope Street. They were bombed during the war - Dad, his 12 month old brother, both Grandparents and Dads mum were in the house but all survived, along with the canary! Sadly the neighbours were not as lucky.
My dad Pete Turner is 83 and we have been chatting about his childhood. He grew up in Highgate Street - where he lived from around 1931 til 1952. In the mid 1940's when Dad would have been around 16 he was friends with the following, and wonder if anyone knows of or is related to:
Stanley...
Does anyone remember a cafe on the Ryland Cafe corner of Grosvenor Street and Island ?? Street. Back in the 19320's 30's maybe 40's it was run by Mary Turner. Her husband Richard drove for Pickfords. Does anyone remember them? Any memories you can share would be great.
I have checked back through letters my Dad received and Merthy Tydfil council confirmed that Richard William b 1885 - his father was not Richard.
However the Richard in the census age 12 would have been born in 1888 or 1889. Its a very annoying mystery !
Hi - thank you for this. It did occur to me that his age on birth certificate could be wrong. I will follow this up. Its really hard trying to prove anything.
Cool - if its the same one my great grandmother Mary ran it at some time. Not sure of dates. Only thing anyone can tell me about her is that she was a scary lady!!!
hi - no Richard Turner junior was a carter on his marriage licence and he is also listed as a coal dealers carter on the birth certificate of his son George Turner born 1910
hi I really appreciate your help. I will follow up the information you found. Its getting to prove a real headache - my dad and I have been looking at this on and off for 10 years.
Many thanks
hi thanks for the quick reply
his father is also Richard Turner and his occupation is publican.
(I can find a Richard Turner - beer reseller on the 1901 census living at Wrentham Street- but no Richard Junior living there)
Hi new to this and I am having real trouble finding a birth certificate for Richard William Turner.
I have his marriage certificate - married Aug 1907 to Mary Nicholls - both aged 21 and living at 19 and back of 19 Thorpe Street putting his date of birth from Aug 85 to Aug 86.
There are 3...
Wow that was quick. THANK YOU.
His father was a publican so wonder if he ran the White Lion - although not convinced he was still living at home in 1907 when he married.
I am really struggling to find a birth certificate so thought I would learn more on the detail I do have hoping that it...
Does anyone remember a transport cafe called "rylands" (not sure about spelling) on corner of Grosvenor Street/Road and Island Street in Ladywood?

hi - looking for more info on my great grandfather who married in 1907 at St Jude when he was living at 19 Thorpe Street.
Anyone know if this is the same Thorpe Street as the Barracks mentioned in this thread?
