    Celebrities in passing

Gordon Kaye (Allo Allo) in Stirchley doing his shopping at a greengrocer, elderly crossroads character who lived on a barge? was walking round Horsefair where he had an apartment

    Old street pics..

Yes, I did the same, aged just 11 :innocent: we were told by older kids to say we were 16 and worked at the BSA and even with our squeeky voices they still let us in :joy: Us kids got up to all sorts of tricks back then, climbing over the gate at the Raven pub and getting an arm full of empty...

    Old street pics..

For me it was either walking to the WOB :D in Weoley Castle where I lived in the 1950's or getting the 22 bus to Selly 'Oak' cinema and walking back afterwards, someone used to walk along the waiting line handing us a picture card

    Old street pics..

Fantastic photo's, I've said it before but these photo's show a lost world where you could walk around and find local shops for everything you wanted, a cafe a short walk from anywhere. Lots of interesting family owned shops, antiques and junk shops everywhere and now gone for ever and sadly we...

    Hurst Street

And me, they used to put out containers on the pavement of low priced weird switches and other strange bits of electrical gear which I used to buy occasionally thinking ,this might come in handy. :D :D

    Hurst Street

The photo suggests quite an early date using a timed lens cap as it shows everyone blurred because they moved, but the building is more focused, there is even a ghost image of a figure in the road

    Horses on the canals

Well yes but the Horse had no load to pull so little effort required there so the Horse could enjoy the view along with his handler :D

    The Anchor Bradford Street/Rea Sreet

Strange to call a pub the Anchor so far from the sea but the B,ham assay marks on silver etc is an Anchor, apparently the result of tossing a coin with Sheffield according to Googling it

    Bow Street, Horsefair

That's interesting, seems to be rates for the dwellings which had all gone long before 1961 when I worked there

    Horses on the canals

I feel sure these boat Horses had a far better life than those hauling coal and other supplies round the smoke polluted city streets. After the first hard pull the boats would follow with little effort, and of course no hills to climb other than a slight upgrade at a lock

    Horses on the canals

Mac, one of the the last Horses to work B,ham canals, with his owner "Caggy"

    Rotton Park street

Spot on! incredibly the building is still there along with the lamp post complete with the same labels on, original B&W photo must also be recent

    Rotton Park street

Here is the photo made brighter, looks like an abandoned area awaiting demolition, rubbish in the gutters everywhere, looks like a corner shop with 2 people down the end. Typical Victorian era with lots of small paned windows for workshops, entrance must be round the corner

    Dawlish Road Selly Oak

I went to Ilmo and left in 1961 but not sure I went to Harborne baths though o_O Not so happy for me trying to learn to swim at the shallow end of Selly Oak baths. Although I grew up to be 6ft the water came right up to my nose as I was very short then so would not dare let go of the rail and I...

    Dawlish Road Selly Oak

I was about to add that we were sent from Weoley Castles schools for swimming lessons there, I remember the shop you mention with broken Smiths crisps and also broken biscuits as well

    IN OUR GARDENS 2025

Pleione Formosana Orchids, these are very hardy indeed and the ones on my rockery will flower a bit later than these in a pot, tthey produce bulbils which soon grow into flowering size

    Birmingham on Sea

We have been to the illuminated carnival several times, there is nothing similar anywhere in the UK. it does involve a lot of standing around though as it takes 2-3 hours to go past and sometimes there are delays, the same carnival goes round other towns in the area as well, most are...

    Ghost signs of Birmingham

Is the word more likely to be diesetters rather than diesets, a diesetter made sometimes unique special parts for machines

    Bow Street, Horsefair

It was another world Lyn, demolition was going on everywhere in Brum and they are still at it now wanting to pull down the indoor and rag markets. The Victorian building in Bow street I worked from for 18 years is still there today :worried:
