Birmingham Corporation pages from 1945 telephone directory

The * symbol meant at the time that the subscriber rents a number of auxiliary numbers that are tried first before the engaged tone is given. Yes, the BCS entries certainly show the extent of the Co-op's reach and somewhere I have posted TASCO's entries as BCS didn't have the city to itself...

    Tram routes 1912

I don't know of any route maps that early but the best book is likely to be the Birmingham Corporation Tramways published in 1982 by the TPC and by Terry Barker, John Stanford and Terry Mayou, as I recall it as being very detailed. Peter Gould gives quite a succinct account of the complexities...

    Wrensons shops

Hello all The page from the 1937 Birmingham telephone directory that has the entries for Wrenson's shops. The photo above would have been 168 Gravelley Lane, ERDington 1528. The list of shops shows that they were quite extensive. Mike

    City Centre Photographs

Yes, the view is from Corporation St, just up from Martineau Street, as Barrow's Stores (seen here on the right in Lancaster Buildings) was just along from the corner of Bull St - the gap in the buildings about where the 'bus is. Further up would be Old Square, with Priory Street running across...

    Barrows Stores

The Dutch Girl is interesting - this sort of design is often connected with Holland and cocoa and I wonder if it is a link back to Barrow's origins and connections with Cadbury's and John Cadbury's shop that opened in Bull St in 1824 and which was passed over to Richard Cadbury Barrow in 1849...

    Barrows Stores

Its been a while since I posted on here but I've just acquired some items from Barrow's Store - a shop I recall in their 'new' 1960s premises on Corporation St that sadly didn't last long. Founded as Barrow's in 1849, when John Cadbury of chocolate fame handed over the shop he'd started in Bull...
