    Yes, I remember the kids used to wind the bridge up as far as they could and then let it drop down with a big thump. I bought a Canadian style canoe for a fiver from an old chap who used to hire them out at ‘Happy Valley’ on the canal. I kept it in a shed owned by the Drawbridge Store

    This old drawbridge was constructed in oak with weighted arms. It was raised with a simple chain wound round a drum. The latest version is steel, complete with barriers and traffic lights. How complicated life has become!
