    Richard Chamberlain

He died a couple of days ago and the reason I'm mentioning it is that he played Hamlet at the Rep in 1969 and was apparently very good. (I didn't see it and rather wish I had but saw the revival with Alec McCowen).

Derek Jacobi talks about the Rep.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0028q8y/influential-with-katty-kay-series-3-derek-jacobi It's a short interview and he says a little about his time at the Rep in the 1960s.

Fabulous. You don't often hear the word 'dainty' these days!

    The Repair Shop BBC1 5th January 2025

One of the items was a clocking-in clock from a factory in Birmingham that manufactured street lighting. The name was Crawford. Another was a bicycle used for bicycle polo, brought in by members of (unless I misheard) the Solihull Bicycle Polo Club.

Thank you, that's brilliant. We've become slightly obsessed! And Polish Dancing Party is a perfect description :-)

    LP record of Polish music

My husband found this record in a charity shop, and it has very little information, no date, for instance. There is nothing about it on Discogs but the label is Pathe and it sounds like a recording from the 1950s or 1960s. Any advice on how to find out something about it, the artists on it, etc...

    Lewis's Department Store

I had some Chad Valley toys and think that one of them was a tricycle. I can't remember the toy department but I was taken to see Father Christmas there. I mentioned this thread to my husband, who said he thought he had some kind of game from Chad Valley, and pointed out that my tricycle would...

    Lewis's Department Store

I knew that Harrods had a bank, so shouldn't really have been surprised that Lewis's did. Thanks for all the information.

    Lewis's Department Store

My father passed the exam for grammar school (so long ago that I don't know if it was called the 11-plus at that time), but his grandparents who brought him up couldn't afford it. It struck me as very unfair. But who knows...

"Three Salons at the seaside" film

They always had names like that in the past! Hilda had previously had a sweet shop, but must have retrained, and re-opened as a salon.

"Three Salons at the seaside" film

This film from the 1990s about three hair salons in Blackpool is brilliant https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0d2pngh It reminded me of Hilda's salon in Small Heath where I used to be taken as a small girl. Are there any salons like this now, with hairdryers with hoods? Such a friendly...

    Saltley Secondary School

Miss Thompson strikes again. The other day I got a clue in the Guardian quiz entirely thanks to her :) It was to do with a Burns poem.

    Henrys Stores

I didn't know it had a restaurant, but my memories of it are vague.
