    Such a pity my dad is not still around! He died a couple of years back (aged 97!), but used to work for Southall and Smith and went out to South Africa in about 1953 to install weighing machinery for them. (I remember letters coming back from him, with wonderful stamps picturing elephants...

    Boarding school in "Hampstead Row, Lozells Road", c 1841

    Yay, success - there is indeed a Maria Harvett in Hamstead Row! She is listed as a schoolmistress (along with a slightly younger Sarah Harvett, similarly described). The place is not described as a school, but seven female pupils - ranging in age from 9 to 15 - are listed at the same address...

    Ah yes, good point! And it looks as if "Hampstead Row"later become Hampstead/Hamstead Road, so in Handsworth not Lozells. Does anyone know if there was a boarding school there in 1841?

    Pigot's Directory of Birmingham, published around 1841/1842, lists a Maria Harvett working at, or possibly running, a boarding school in Hampstead Row, Lozells Road. Does anyone know anything about this establishment? I know there were other schools at/near Aston Hall but, from the address, this...
