    Arsenal Street

Thank you everyone, this is all so, so helpful. This particular ancestor was a carpenter from Shropshire and they've been critical in my research. Only recently found out where he was when he died and it completes the puzzle of his life. As with so many Victorian Brummies sadly you find that...

    Arsenal Street

Can anyone tell me what Arsenal Street used to be like? One of my ancestors died at no.32 Arsenal Street in 1883 and would like to understand what the housing was like. Think the only surviving building there now is the Marquis of Lorne / The Roost.

    Dyers' Buildings, Park Road

Does anyone know anything about the above location? It was in the parish of All Saints in Soho. It's turned up on a death certificate for an ancestor but I'm not having much luck tracking anything down about it - there are so many results for the Holborn / London EC1 buildings by the same name...

Recommendations? Lives of c19th & c20th Birmingham oral history

Sorry, to be clear I know there won't be c19th recordings - obviously - however, there were people in the C20th who grew up in the late C19th who could recount about their childhood experiences. Thank you RE: the films, and yes such a shame about the condescending narrator! Not proposing to do...

Recommendations? Lives of c19th & c20th Birmingham oral history

Yes it's very sad about the Museum being closed! I will try the Friends as the OHS seems to feature modern material! Thank you.

Recommendations? Lives of c19th & c20th Birmingham oral history

Thank you, I think these are modern though rather than voices of the c19th and c20th.

Recommendations? Lives of c19th & c20th Birmingham oral history

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for oral histories from this period - ideally I would like to hear people from Small Heath and Bordesley (especially those who lived in the back to backs) talking about their lives. It seems to be weirdly difficult to track these oral histories down...

Photography studio: T Humphries, Osborne Studio, Cattell Road, Small Heath

Thank you - I didn't even think to look him up on the census!

Photography studio: T Humphries, Osborne Studio, Cattell Road, Small Heath

Just wondering if anyone has any information about this particular photography studio in Small Heath? Would have been active in the 1880s.

Oh wow, I definitely wasn't expecting that!

    [264] Herbert Road small heath

Than Thank you so much Lyn, really brings it to life. He worked at S.B. Whitfield at the Gladstone Works towards the end of his life - started out as an iron moulder (no surprise being from the Ironbridge Gorge originally) and then ended up doing wire work for the bedsteaders towards the end of...

    Witton Cemetery office closed?

Thanks Lyn - popped down anyway this weekend but no reasoning is given for the closure. Sadly walked to where the plot is to find that it's a mass grave with nothing to indicate that people are even buried there, doubly sad when the places they lived have also been bulldozed and replaced with...

    [264] Herbert Road small heath

Does anyone have any photos of Herbert Road as it once was? My great-grandmother lived there with her father, Thomas Ward, an iron moulder. So many places where my family lived have been bulldozed and replaced with industrial units, it'd be nice to get an idea of the place. Thank you!

    Witton Cemetery office closed?

Hi everyone, The Birmingham City Council website says that the Witton Cemetery office is closed until further notice. Is this true? Has anyone managed to contact them recently? I'm hoping to find a grave up there in the next few weeks and could really do with the help of the knowledgeable people...

    New Road, Small Heath

Thanks - yes, I've flicked through and I understand the vague area where it was but I was hoping someone might have some ideas about what it might have been renamed. That's a shame about the maps - I know other lines I've researched have been a bit luckier with having bits written up in places...

    New Road, Small Heath

Can someone please help me locate where 'New Road' as given on the 1861 census somewhere near Whitmore Lane in Small Heath would have been? I'd love to know where my family were at the time but can't find anything online.
