    Black Country Museum

I went to the Museum 2 weeks ago for the first time and I have to say I was rather disappointed. There were no trams or trolley buses working and several exhibits were locked up. A lot of areas were building sites and surrounded by wire fences. Regards from Redruth Arnold

    Grand Hotel Colmore Row

The Grand Hotel nearly killed my father. We lived in Quinton and he worked in Aston. So every morning he would get off the No. 9 bus at Chamberlain square and walk down Colmore Row to Steelhouse Lane past the Grand. One morning a piece of stone fell off the roof of Grand and landed just in...

    Royal Coronations : Birmingham response

I remember going to London by coach after the coronation to see the street decorations in the Mall and Buckingham Palace etc. This was a works outing (remember them) organised by Dads company - Bowmans Radiators in Aston I think. There were two coaches in the party and the other coach ran out...

    iron founders

Whilst it may be true that there were not many iron foundries in Birmingham making castings for sale to other companies I have come across quite a few companies that had foundries for making castings for their own use. I used to work for Hunt & Mitton in Oozells St. North who had their own...

    Occupations That Have Faded Away

One of my dad's first jobs wasat a factory in Dudley that made bucket ears which were the metal lugs to which the handle was attached. I think he may have served his apprenticeship there. He was a press tool maker. This would have been during the first world war (he was born in 1903). He would...

    Occupations That Have Faded Away

Looking at this video reminded me of when my mother would go to the grocers at the Warley Odeon ( Singletons ) where they would roast coffee in the shop. The smell of roasting coffee is so distinctive I can still remember it now after 70 years but is not found in any shops now.

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

When I had a problem with my debit card with the Natwest ( an unusual transaction had taken place ) I went to the local branch they were sympathetic but they took me to an office and said ring this number and sort it out yourself. This really annoyed me because I am very deaf and I am not good...

Old style food still going strong

When I was courting my wife (early 60's) she came to our house for Sat lunch and my mum served stuffed hearts and it nearly made her sick! The relationship survived somehow. My childhood was spent in the era of rationing when the prime cuts of meat were almost non-existent so it was offal or...

    Warley Woods

I too can remember sledging in Warley Woods in the early 50's. It must have been quite a walk for me and my friend David from the Holly Bush Quinton up to the woods with the sledge but the rewards were worth it. I remember one year the 'death run' had been salted as it was considered too...
