    Clifton Road Aston

Hi Judy & Bill We lived at 1/161 Clifton Road from 1959 until we got rehoused in 1969. I was the eldest and I had 2 younger sisters. We all went to Upper Thomas Street until we moved to Kingstanding in 69

    Clifton Road Aston

Hi Malcolm, we lived at 1/161 Clifton Road from 1959-1969. Our entry, if I remember correctly, would have backed on to Gothic Terrace. Those back to backs were quite a bit higher than the road and the first house on the left had a wall separating the small garden from the pavement. Our name was...

    Clifton Road Aston

Hi Eric/Fay We lived at 1/161 Clifton Road from 1955 to 1969 when we moved to Kingstanding which was halfway between Upper Sutton Street and Potters Hill. Going back into my aging memory bank there used to be a general store about half dozen houses up towards Potters Hill run by a lady known...

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

No sorry, my ageing memory cannot remember any teacher's names at UTS. I do remember having a lady teacher when in my final year and her husband was a journalist.

I can vaguely remember the Annexe being in Tower Road, I'm pretty sure in the second year of primary School spending a year in the Annexe and playing marbles in the quadrangle which passed for the playground. I would habve been 7 or 8 at this time so around 1963.

Without wanting to sound disparaging, I drive through Aston to and from work everyday and being a claret and blue season ticket holder, I go to every home match and I just can't believe the area now. As I said we didn't have it easy, we were always happy and enjoyed life and every family knew...

Hi Dave We had 8 houses and 4 shared toilets in our yard. We were lucky though, we lived at the first house so it was only a short trip down the path and round the corner to our toilet. If we ran out of loo paper it was the old newspapers ripped into squares. We got used very quickly to going...

Hi Dave I can only echo what you and Lyn have both said. I was born In Loveday Street Hospital in 1955 and lived at 1/161 Clifton Road until 1969. I have done OK in life since my Aston childhood which whilst hard, no running hot water, bathroom etc, I can honestly say I enjoyed my Aston...

    Upper Thomas Street School Aston

Hi Astonboy I went to Upper Thomas Street Infants & Juniors from 1960-1966. I didn't go to the Senior School. We lived in Clifton Road. Unfortunately, I can't remember anyones names or teachers names. I can remember we had a lady teacher in Junior School around 1965 and in 1966, if I remember...

    Clifton Road Aston

Hi Rob, I was interested to hear you were born in the Bricklayers Arms. We lived in Clifton Road from 59-69 before moving to Kingstanding. In the early 60's a neighbour of ours, Jack McCarron took over the Bricklayers for a few years. My dad used to help him out occasionally behind the bar. Jack...

Hello All Does anyone have any photos or information on the Bricklayers Arms that used to be on the corner of Clifton Road and Potters Hill. In the early 60's the landlord was Jack McCarron who had moved from our back to backs in Clifton Road and took over the Bricklayers for a few years. My...

    Pubs Of The Past

I remember the Queens Head in Aberdeen Street but I can't remember the Bellefield. Alzheimers kicking in I guess. Although I came from Aston before moving to Kingstanding in 69, I had several friends from school who lived in the Winson Green area. Mike

    Pubs Of The Past

Hello All. The White Swan was on the corner of Victoria Road/Whitehead Road. It is now a Medical Centre. I remember back in the 60's they used to store the bottles outside in the yard. The Travellers rest was on Whitehead Road/Bartons Bank although I don't remember much about that one. Mike

Hi Judy, if you were bussing it from the City Centre I guess you would have caught either the old number 5 or 7 which terminated at the bottom end of Court Lane in Perry Common and you probably got off either by Witton roundabout or Tame Road/Brookvale Road junction and then walked up Tame Road...
