    bundy clocks around birmingham

As the title of the thread is 'around Birmingham', I can mention that there is the wreck of a West Bromwich Corporation Bundy Clock on Spon Lane just off the main Smethwick-Oldbury Road. I remember travelling to my grandmother's house on the no. 11 Outer Circle. I always wondered why, going...

    Canals of Birmingham

The Galton name comes from a member of the Galton Family, possibly Samuel, who later built Warley Abbey in Warley Woods. He had a house just beyond this point between the two canals at the point at which they separate.

    Canals of Birmingham

I have a question about the tunnels on the canals at Galton Bridge. Actually, further research has answered my question before I asked it. So for information: I wanted to know the name of the tunnels as they are not listed on Wikipedia's List of Canal Tunnels. I have found that they are named...

    Elmdon Airport Birmingham International Airport

I had not realised that the Air Terminal in Easy at the side of the Civic Centre (now called Baskerville House) was designated as a temporary building. As a child of that era, to me 'pre-fab' buildings were part of normal life.

    Birmingham buses

So they would have been buses London bus drivers would have been familiar with as London Transport had many AEC vehicles

    Birmingham University

The bus/car/coach, what do you call it? That type of vehicle is called a 'char à banc' usually pronounced 'sharra bang' in English.

New HS2 Station in Curzon Street

First a question for the Mods. Should we keep this thread for historical stuff and have a new thread for the HS2 station? My comment is that as this is election year, Andy Street has updated his transport map for 2040. This shows the planned new chords at Bordesley to allow the Nottingham and...

    City Centre Photographs

I would say looking at the church spire that it is definitely St Pauls. Studying the maps I would say that the photo was taken near the junction of Newhall Street and Great Charles Street. I think that the camera has, because of foreshortening, shown the hill steeper than it actually is.

Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

01615452302 This number is operated by PEERLESS NETWORK UK LIMITED and is primarily associated with a medical scam activity. While its dialling code associates it with Manchester, England, it utilises VoIP technology. As a result, the actual location of the caller cannot be determined. The...

    Odeon, Birmingham New Road/Hagley Road

Probably the best known architect of that time was John Madin. He lived long enough to see much of his life's work demolished. For that I feel sorry for him.

    Odeon, Birmingham New Road/Hagley Road

An interesting snippet of information: Oscar Deutsch, the owner of the Odeon chain, who lived in Edgbaston used to take his weekend party guests to the Warley Odeon on Sundays to private showings of the latest films before they were on general release. The advertising slogan for Odeon was Oscar...

    Odeon, Birmingham New Road/Hagley Road

At the time in the 1930s there was what was known as Odeon Style of Architecture as the same architect designed many of the Odeon cinemas at that time.

    Odeon, Birmingham New Road/Hagley Road

No definitely the Warley Odeon. I spent so many Saturday mornings at the Children's Matinee in that cinema in the first half of the 1950s,

The Warley Odeon junction of Wolverhampton New Road and Hagley Road West has long since been demolished. Now there is an office block on site. Present view from Google Maps StreetView.

    Occupations That Have Faded Away

As there are over 250 posts, I don't know if this has been mentioned. When I started work, I was amazed at the skill of Comptometer operators who could do any calculation. Calculations that I needed them to do was pricing Tons Cwt Qrt at £ s d per ton. This was a skilled job for women in many...
