Posting this map of Cranbury Street (Nechells) for member Keith Belcher

    Green Lane, Small Heath

I couldn't find a thread completely dedicated to Green Lane although there are several with it in the title. A couple of images after the tornado of 1931.

    Whittall Street

Looking at Kelly's for 1955 & 1964 (I don't have access to the years in between), it appears that Whittall Street was virtually obliterated. Although Parker-Hale Ltd. is visible on both photographs I'm not convinced the premises were still occupied in 1963.

    St. Mary's Row, Gun Quarter

I can't find a specific thread for this so I apologise if there is one. Edited: Correct building number now shown for William Ford.

Maps of Birmingham 1966-77 with house numbers

Before the Old-Maps website was lost to us I copied areas of mainly Lozells, Aston and Nechells. I am not sure if there is any copyright involved with these, perhaps somebody could advise me on this. I copied these because I needed information about the blocks of flats which had been built and...

    Temple Street

My Gt-Gt-Grandfather had premises (rented I imagine) at No. 23 Temple Street, I always wanted to know what this shop would have looked like. This was in 1852 so very unlikely there would be a photograph in existence, I found this drawing on the odd fellows hall thread, the Mudie shop on the...

    Google Street View Distortions

I was checking around Waterworks Street and was unable to find a reference to the tower block there, the sign seemed to say Mormanel Tower, looking at a later date highlighted the 's' in Normansell. It's fascinating that only the lettering was distorted, the rest of the image appeared correct.

    Snape Street, Hockley

I came across Snape Street today but couldn't find it on a map, apparently at some time between 1882 and 1884 it became part of Branston Street. It appears Branston Street was renumbered around the same time and so I'm posting this information in case members are trying to trace where their...

    Before and (just) after demolition

We have a thread called Then & Now which is great but I've seen a few images that show an area before and just after demolition which really highlights the immediate change in the landscape. I will start the thread with 2 sets of images from Furnace Lane.

    1911 census place of birth

Is anybody able to decipher the place of birth for William Hayes please. I think it is Hilsborough but if so the 'H' des not match that of Head and Hayes. I can't find any other place it could be on Google. Thank-you

St. Mary's (Aston Brook) Church School

This school apparently started in Park Lane in 1860 before moving to Avenue Road, it's difficult to locate where this would be although it was somewhere between Clarendon Street and Sutton/Upper Sutton Street i.e. The Eagle PH. I would be grateful if someone could post a map (if one exists) from...

    Cattells (Cattell's) Grove, Nechells

There are several references to Cattells Grove but there doesn't appear to be a dedicated thread, here are a few images to start it off.

    William Street North

I thought it might be a good idea to start this thread, there are so many William Streets I even came across one in Saltley. The image identified as Court 6 is very difficult to correlate to the court shown on the 1889 map.

    Frederick Restall Ltd.

In 1974 Frederick Restall Ltd. (previously trading as Hilton & Restall c.1879) celebrated their 110th anniversary, this company listed as 'house furnishers' was situated in various premises on Great Hampton Street (although prior to this could be found on Gt. Charles Street), in the Kelly's...

    Sutton Street, Aston

I couldn't find a thread specifically for Sutton Street, Aston. So pleased to see that they only used 'healthy' leeches.

    Furnace Meadow, Lozells

By accident today I came across a reference to Furnace Meadow (and Guildford House) on the 1851 census. Lyn (and I) think it would be a good idea to start a new thread on this subject. The 1841 census also lists this area (approx. 19 properties at Furnace Meadow) as well as reference to round...

    Sturmey-Archer

Sorting through all the dust laden objects I have accumulated I came across a Sturmey-Archer Master Catalogue dated 1958. Although primarily based in Nottingham, the company were prominent all over the UK including Birmingham at 377 Bolton Road, Small Heath. The 20 acre site of the factory in...
