    The Gentlewomen by Laura Talbot

Published in 1952 and set during the war, part of the book takes place in Birmingham. Characters pass through New Street Station, and there's a gloomy boarding-house somewhere in Birmingham. It's fairly unusual to find mentions of the city in novels, unless they're by Jonathan Coe.

    Henrys Stores

I hadn't heard of Faery Glen clothes for dolls, or Almond Blossom perfume, but according to Google a company called Floral Street makes a Sweet Almond Blossom perfume that sounds delightful! It looks as if the clothes were made to fit Sindy dolls.

    John Drinkwater

I'm putting this here because of his connection with the Rep. The latest journal of the Friends of the Dymock Poets has a very long article by Catherine Hindson about Drinkwater's connection with the Cadbury factory. It's too long to summarise, but I'll quote one sentence: "he had a...

    C&A on Radio 4

I don't really remember the men's clothes. There was a range for women called Yessica (the name sticks in my mind), but I don't know what was special about it!

    C&A on Radio 4

I didn't hear all the programme, but what I heard was interesting. You got to hear about what it was like to work there for many years. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002n7tx I wasn't sure whether this would be better in the Shops thread.

Thank you, that's very kind. The name is Riley, though has been spelled in various ways, but it's Riley on the census return.

    Homes Buildings

I've just found several relatives I'd never heard of living at Court House, 6 Palmer Street, Aston in 1901, which look like the same place. They had come over here from Ireland the year before, as far as I know.
