Jobs you did after school and Saturdays.

I was errand boy for the Coop greengrocers in Balsall Heath Road when I was 14 -16, right at the end of 1950's. It was the best paid job in around. I worked after school and all day Saturdays - and also, eventually before school one day a week at the Coop's warehouse in the market. I learned...

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

Thylacine and Aidan, Generally, this piece of test kit was known as a 'sender'; it would perpetually generate test calls, as you say, and hold failed calls which could be traced and cleared. not only were 'Senders' in each exchange, they were in 'tandems' and the reports(known as 'Obs', short...

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

Astonian, I imagine you are slightly mixed up with the location and that you are refering to the exchange in The Dogpool at Stirchley, just a short way from Pershore Road and not far from the County Ground. I think it was Selly Oak exchange. Here was also ENG control which handled subscribers...

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

Springfield Exchange is still there - at least the building is; I spotted it from our bus on the now fondly remembered Outer Circle bus tour a few weeks ago. I worked there for a few months doing the 'exchange construction' part of my apprenticeship (Youth-in-Training, as it was called). One of...

    Balsall Heath.

Phil and Mike's bits about a grocers shop. It could have been 'Axes' which was in the vicinity of where Phil's detective work leads us. Ted

Traditional Songs we sang at school

Early One Morning. Early one morning, Just as the sun was rising, I heard a maid sing, In the valley below. CHORUS: Oh, don't deceive me, Oh, never leave me, How could you use A poor maiden so? Remember the vows, That you made to your Mary, Remember the bow'r, Where you vowed to be true...

    Railways in films

Re: NIGHT MAIL. I still enjoy this iconic information film after countless viewings. The poem is very Betjemenesque although, as Keegs points out, it is W H Audens. What happenned was that the Film Unit ran out of money to enable the film to be finished with the addition of a sound track. The...

Hi Bob, One of my 'target activities' in India was to sit on the step of the carriage with door open. It was great! Ted

    Indian Hill Railways

Yes, a wonderful series. A couple of years ago we took off for Southern India. We had a few ideas of places we wanted to see and experience. We wanted to avoid the touristy places and seek out the real India - certainly no package tour stuff! Our plan was to travel everywhere by train, which we...

    Longbridge Road Balsall Heath

Bernard, I have just picked up your post regarding your brother Joe. The Arnold I referred to who is on Friends Reunited, told me that she lived in Sherbourne Road, opposite Longbridge Road, and she had no knowledge of the Mrs Arnold I recall so well who had the shop. Ted

    Longbridge Road Balsall Heath

Yes there was a Bainbridge family there. The Arnolds lived in Sherbourne road; there is one of them on Friends Reunited. A Mrs. Arnold had a secondhand shop on the Balsall Heath Road corner with Longbridge Road, opposite the Wearwell. Ted

    Longbridge Road Balsall Heath

A few months ago someone was selling a Suckling's Ginger Beer Bottle on Ebay. Here is a photo of Longbridge Road from the Sherbourne Road end. I wish I had bought that bottle now, but we are trying to de-clutter. Ted

    Birmingham Town Hall

The restoration is magnificent. We live within easy reach, only a few minutes walk at each end of a short train journey. We visit once or twice a year. The organ is fantastic. I know that all the work cost many millions of pounds, but I think it has been worthwhile. I too sang there in the...

Radio: Crystal Sets & CB Radio

When CBs were illegal, a business associate and I were going to buy some and make vast profits because the resale price was sky-high. On the day the deal was about to go through, the government lifted the ban and the prices tumbled. We had a close escape from a financial disaster! Great fun. Ted
