    Paradise Development 2022

Yes, either Joseph Priestley or James Watt it isn't clear yet. The other plinth is under construction at the other end of Ratcliff Passage near the reclining bronze figure of Thomas Attwood. So there will be a set of statues there.

    George Shaw, early Victorian photographer

The George Shaw photographic exhibition can now be seen on Paradise Street across the road from the Town Hall. It is worth seeing though awkwardly placed on a narrow busy pavement.

    Paradise Development 2022

I was curious about the location of Ratcliff Passage, so being in the city on Tuesday evening, I went to have a look. It runs between the Town Hall and Three Chamberlain Square, a towering red construction which is really too close to the Town Hall. The plinths for the statues are constructed...

    The Vampire

It is a shame Lyn. I was wondering if Vampire Yard and the pub might have been named as a memorial to the poet John Stagg - who seems to have been famous as a blind working class poet in his time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stagg_(poet) Stokkie

    The Vampire

Unfortunately the link to #41Midlands Pubs isn't functional. Can anyone enlighten me on the connection between John Stagg (1770–1823) the working class poet who wrote "The Vampyre" (1810) and the John Stagg the landlord of The Vampire Tavern? Was the Birmingham John Stagg a descendant?

    The Vampire

A very interesting thread. Bram Stoker published Dracula in 1897 so too late for the naming of the pub and Vampyre Court. The OED quotes 1819 John Polidori ... The Vampyre p. xx, He had been tormented by a vampyre, but had found a way to rid himself of the evil, by eating some of the earth out...

    Calthorpe Road

19 Calthorpe Road is currently to let to a sole occupier. It is described as a stunning four-storey, self-contained period office building, set within beautifully landscaped ground. I imagine many of these houses were built as dwellings in the days of large families and servants? [Calthorpe...

    Calthorpe Road

It is hard to discover land ownership in England, but many of these fine properties like 36 Calthorpe Road are leasehold and I think is simply being refitted after a commercial let to a medical data research company. I have an inkling that Calthorpe Road is part of the Calthorpe Estate which...
