    Wikipedia referencing the aforementioned John/Jack Hughes gives his name as James Wilson. And there is a James Wilson living in Handsworth who was a builder. 1881 census lists him as a builder employing 50 men living at Soho House, Park Avenue, so of some means.

    It could be that he was deemed unfit by a local regiment and so tried his luck with the Devonshire Regiment. Not uncommon. Possibly under assumed name, which wouldn't help.

    The obvious place to look would be his Medal Card, which should list his regiments. However, though I can find one for his brother (I assume) I can't find a likely one for William.

    James Hall married Eliza Sparrye at St Mary's, Handsworth 11 Apr 1841. Appears to be reg. Jun qtr 1841 West Brom. It looks like the page references don't match on feeBMD.
