    Hughes Evelyn Margaret

The Penns Lane address appears to have been her sister's house. She is listed there in 1939 and it's the address given on her husband's (Clement Brookfield) probate. No children for them.

Sorry, mistyped. That should've been 26 Apr 1960.

    Hughes Evelyn Margaret

I think this might be her (possibly need more checking)... Evelyn Margaret Hughes born 11 Dec 1889 Handsworth, reg . Mar 1890 West Brom. Parents Thomas Hughes and Christina Reading. Had at least one sister, Dorothy, who was a school teacher. Married William Alfred Bryant, reg. Sep 1928 Bham S...

Help to find a record of my parents buying their house in 1968

Nothing seems to come up in a search of the Bham newspapers for 49 Bell Lane. A lot about dogs for no. 38 and many listings for new houses in the 1970s.

    Cromwell Street

Might be pushing it with those years (they would probably have to be in their 90s) but you never know. You may already know this but the Browns are listed at 2 back 67 Cromwell St on the 1939 Register.

Are those some sort of tracks on the right hand side of the road?

Sutton Road Erdington: large houses and their residents

Her name was Emma Ash and she was the second wife of Thomas Freer Ash. Rockville or Rock Villa as it is listed at times, doesn't appear to be marked on the maps but on the 1891 census it is four properties from Wilmot House, which is marked on the 1913 map, which is a couple away from the...

    Hicken family

As Smash says in the OP that they know nothing about that side of their family I don't think they would know. However, I've had a quick look and there is a distinct possibility that David is a third cousin of Smash's mother, both being g g grandchildren of Frederick Hicken and Eliza Merchant.

    Hicken family

A few other titbits. The first of your Hicken ancestors that I've found was from Nottingham and the Hickens came to Birmingham via Gloucester. Edwin Hicken's maternal grandmother appears to have been married five times. Alfred's mother, Emma Handy, had a twin sister. The great grandfather of...

    Quiney, James Albert

Is that the James Alfred Quiney mentioned previously born Alcester whose birthplace is sometimes incorrectly listed as Bham or a different one?

    Quiney, James Albert

On the GRO the listing is James Albert Quiney. On freeBMD there is listing for James Alfred Quiney and James Albert Quincy. I'd guess they all refer to the same person and the GRO has the correct name.

    Hicken family

Alfred Morris Hicken was the son of Edwin Hicken and Emma Handy, birth reg. Jun 1901 Aston. Edwin appears to be the son of Frederick Hicken and Eliza Merchant, birth reg. Mar 1864 Gloucester (as Edward). He dies in WWI 1915, a Private in the Royal Warks. A little old maybe. Frederick Hicken...

Apologies I've sent you down the wrong path. Who would have thought that there would be two Alfred Hickens both sons of an Edwin Hicken but there are. Will look further and post some corrections.

    Quiney, James Albert

Strangely it appear that James Albert's possible mother lists herself as widow in 1911 though her husband is still alive and shacked up with another woman whom he marries after his wife's death. Not all that relevant.

    Quiney, James Albert

With the goings on between Leonard and Jessie it would seem possible that the 1944 death for James is correct and if Leonard and Jessie were living as man and wife then maybe that Edith listed her father as deceased was a lie.

    Quiney, James Albert

The James Alfred Quiney who married Florence Baylis has an RAF record and he was born Alcester though his birthplace is listed as Bham at times and he is probably the James mentioned by lyn in post #2.
