Went past the Red Lion tonight,all the windows were boarded up. I believe it was rebuilt in the 70s,and Safeway supermarket was added at the back.

Used the town ones like the Diskery,Reddingtons/Smiths et al. Private ones tended to be the 2 Shirley ones,Phocus and Studio Musica,both long gone now:(

An old 80s haunt of mine has now closed down. All the windows have metal shutters,and a group of travelers have made themselves at home in the back car park. Was a great pub once,but has sadly declined in recent years.

Drove past there about an hour ago,seemed busy enough for the football.

let's hope they've learnt te lessons from the past when planning the new housing.

He lived close to me in Bills Lane in my youth,don't know about later though. What a nice chap,a real working class here who played the game for love,not money. Sad,sad loss,the same age as my father,God Bless you Gil,heaven is a richer place for our loss.

The whole area has changed now,and has been doing so since the factories started to shut in the 80s. Expect the new occupiers had no real use for cafe food.Shame really,as a cafe was like a pub,got people together,helped to form the community.

Being a bit younger than most unfortunately don't remember any of the cafes mentioned. Do remember two cafes from Constitution Hill,both there during the 70s/80s. Rose's Cafe,and Vi's cafe.Both popular,serving good food to the local factory workers.Think they finished late 80s,or early...

I remember that the Greet during the 80s had converted to Courage brewery.The Wagon and Horses went the same way. When I worked in the area in 1988 it struggled with trade.Many of its locals preferred to walk to the Brit,or the local Tysley WMC instead.

You can't compete without the tools,and this is again down to brewery greed.In about 1990 the big brewers tried to put Wetherspoons out of business by blocking their expansion,using their influence with local councils etc.You have to ask if you'd prefer to see the brewers go out of business...

Well Maggie,it's not just trying,it's about succeeding. Only some will achieve this,same as in all business. If it was easy then most pubs would be a success,alas this is not the case. My comments were in general,and not aimed specifically at one place. Wetherspoons have a winning formula...

Weatherspoons is full of real ale,as is the Lord Clifden,both are also big on the grub.Expect it's the price we have to pay.

Food,the future of the pub,provided of course it is no longer a pub lol. Not many true pubs left now,the future is Weatherspoons,like it or not.
