Thanks Pete. I have a desktop & a laptop. Laptop is fairly new but doesn`t have ethernet port. I wonder if i can get an adapter to plug the ethernet cable into hdmi & use the hdmi port on the laptop. Probably not.

No mate, you`re not preaching to grandma. Just someone who doesn`t even know how to get inside a pc. I may have to ask her indoors if she`ll lend me some dosh to buy a new (2nd hand ) pc. Many thanks anyway.

I have just tried that & it says " no operation can be carried out while media is disconnected" It is connected & enabled.

From router to pc i`ve only tried port 1 of 2. 50m of cable. I will try jukeboxes advice & if i bugger up my pc in doing so i shall go round to his house & throw a brick thru his window.:)

Thanks oM, i think i`ll buy a better ethernet cable. The ones i`ve tried are cat5 & cat 5e.

Pete, that`s far too complicated for my tiny brain. I did the d/l but that brought up 4 more icons & i wasn`t sure what to do.

Yes i did see that icon. I disabled the ethernet & then enabled it. Still no good.

Check all drivers, every one is working ok.

Yes i have tried a different cable, still no joy. My pc is quite old so maybe that`s the problem !

How can i get an ethernet cable to work? I`ve disconnected the wifi & enabled the ethernet but it`s not working. TIA.

My feeble claim to fame was seeing Billy Fury making a film at Gatwick airport. Another feeble claim was being detained by East German police at Checkpoint Charlie, & was" rescued" by a very large Russian officer. Very embarrassing !
