I have found an ancestor living at The Firs, Armoury Road, Small Heath in 1911. This sounds a bit of a posh house.....is it? and is it possible to find a picture of it? I have seen a picture of the road its self on the web. He did work at the BSA as a gun machinist. thank you in advance :angel:

Oh Mike many thanks........... I am thrilled to bits. I never knew my Grandmother as she died 1925 leaving James Henry to raised 3 boys. He remarried to Ada Cresswell. again thank you Mike. would it be ok if I take a copy of the picture do you think?

Thank you so much Mike. James Henry & Gertrude Ethel Bott were my Grandparents :)) So is the picture in the first post the 143 Green Lane? It was always said that Gertrude had a second hand shop there but that looks to be a grocers shop. Thank you too berniew for your imformation

My Grandparents lived at 143 Green Lane & my Father & his brothers were born there. I believe they lived there in 1920 for a few years before moving to Belchers Lane. Would this be the same 143 Green Lane is being mention here? If so is that house THE house where they lived :) I am so excited...

I found the workhouse link very interesting as it lists their outgoings & monies received example................. going to Birmingham 2d. There are lots of names in all the listings so........ "Here's that rainy day Wendy" :))

Re: Sir Josiah Masons Wendy, a sad sight indeed I remember the toll of those bells only too well! I also recall one naughty boy who went up into the bell tower and threatened to stay there .........he did eventually come down but only after many threats from the staff and headmaster :)

Thank you Wendy for posting the pictures of Sir Josiah Mason's orphanage. Although I have but a very few happy memories of my time there, it is still very sad to see the demolition pictures. Looking back from a 62year span it is sad to see the mighty building gone forever. Thanks again Wendy
