    The Woodman New Canal Street

On sunny days young people will sit outside on the benches and tables. I'm not so sure about the numbers though and I only visit the Woodman these days if there is an event in the upstairs room. I think that some young people drink sparingly or not at all.

    The Woodman New Canal Street

But as I posted #50 September 2022 it was known that Curzon Street Hub wasn't due to open until 2033 - this date seems to be 2039 now. But there is an awful lot of building work to be done before then. The construction of Curzon Square and the Station complex itself. Students in term time and...

    mysterious "shining gravestone" in Smethwick

BOY LAYS THE GHOST It Was a Lamp Shining on Tombstones By climbing a street lamp-post and obscuring the light with his coat, a boy succeeded last night in laying the 'liveliest ghost that has troubled the Black Country for many a day. Each night this week there has been talk of spectres in...

    Smallbrook Ringway

Sorry Trabo, I found these by searching Calmview for 'Hurst Street Subway'. Screenshot of results. Alas Birmingham Archives are tricky to use. You will need an Archives Card (which you can use in many UK archives). Then you need an appointment at the Wolfson Centre. But once you have these the...

Birmingham Archives have photographs from 1961. These are not digitised though. I don't know if this is any use to you. https://calmview.birmingham.gov.uk/CalmView/Overview.aspx Stokkie

    The name Brummagem

The first surviving documentary record of Birmingham is in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is recorded as the small manor of Bermingeham, worth 20 shillings. (Wikipedia) Text is Medieval Latin with the place name presumably rendered phonetically.

    The name Brummagem

The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) records written usage. Of course oral usage may be considerably earlier. I was delighted to discover that Worcestershire Libraries have digital access from anywhere! Brummagem 1679– Designating counterfeit coins manufactured in the English city of...

    Victoria Square

The old GPO building is now known as Victoria Square House. But the Post Office has now closed and the building seems mainly occupied by law firms. The City Centre Post Office has opened in TG Jones (the new name for W.H. Smith) in Union Street.

    George Shaw, early Victorian photographer

The exhibition outside the Town Hall is over now, I'm afraid. But Jo Gane's video #12 in this thread is well worth watching. She explains the connection between electroplating and daguerréotypes clearly. The daguerréotype is a one off image on a copper plate while the future of photography...
