    Where is this Street ?

Remember that Birchfield road scene and more. Lots of diversions at that time when demolition of buildings and Six Ways underpass was being constructed. I lived in Victoria road and at one time the pile driver noise went on all day for about a month. That particular piece of road is still one...

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

The only Mansfield House now is a block of flats in Chelmsley Wood. I've found a census from 1891 which actually states Edward Preston of Mansfield House. This was the son of Edward Preston 1798-1883 who went on to change the company to Edward Preston & Sons, the famous hand tool manufacturer...

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

Thank you brummy-lad, I couldn't find anything myself. I had to smile at the first attachment. Stable? saddle room? conservatory? tennis lawn? Needless to say, none of those things were there in 1959. In fact, it was pretty run down then. I still remember an unused tiled bathroom with a rusty...

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

I wrote this 6 years ago but have since discovered that this house was once known as Mansfield House. When I lived there in 1959 it had been split into two. I lived with a Family in 28A and presumably the timber merchant was 28B Birchfield Road. I made an image from memory of what it sort of...

    old car snaps

Thanks John, I had a feeling you might come up with a resolution. It is an EOJ reg. Incidently, the Family story is that Pop (Father-in-Law) camped overnight outside this car dealership in Potters Hill Aston in order to be first to buy a car from the vehicles they were selling off cheap the next...

    old car snaps

Hi John, this is another photo (slightly blurred) of the same scene and they were taken around 1958-59. Looks like a late 50s Hillman coming the other way.

    old car snaps

My future Mother-in-Law and Brothers-in-Law stopped on the side of the road for a picnic (as one did back in the day). Did my Father-in-Law coach build it himself or was it an actual model? Did Landrover models have "suicide" doors?

Gower Street Boys and Girls Schools

I'm sure this photo is on the Forum somewhere. Credited to Bob Greathead History Collection, it shows Gower St School teachers in 1955. Most of these were still there in 1961 when I left. Standing left to right: Mr Cross (science), Mr Edwards, Mr Williams (my 2B teacher), Mr Phillips, Mr Dean...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Another point of reference is the left tower of Small Heath Station you can see on the right of the photo. When I worked at the B.S.A in the 60s, the 28A bus crossed Golden Hillock Rd at that junction.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Looks like Stafford Street looking towards Moor St. I used to buy second hand records from one of those shops.

Gower Street Boys and Girls Schools

My best remembered memory of Wally Eyton was when he said to me "Have you given up smoking yet?" You obviously can't say "no" and "yes" would mean you did smoke once. All I could do was to splutter "I dunno Sir". I appreciated the humour only years later. Oh! I've never smoked.

Gower Street Boys and Girls Schools

Lyn, it's the only photo that I've come across showing that part of the school. There must be a photo somewhere that shows all of that building. It's encouraging that there are photos on the Forum of the three corners of Gower St & Guilford St but not that elusive 4th corner showing the School.

Gower Street Boys and Girls Schools

Hi Lyn, yes, this photo was taken in Guilford St. But taken from where the blue dot is facing Gower St. The houses outlined in green are the houses in the photo. Sorry I haven't got a contemporary map. Barry

Gower Street Boys and Girls Schools

What a great photo. If it's from 1950 it looks like the apex roofs had been removed between then and 1958 when I was there. This photo of Guilford St taken from Lozells Rd end shows the corner of the school as I remember it.

    Cowper Street

You are spot on Brummy Lad, the view is of Cowper St looking across Summer Lane to Newtown Row. You can make out the 'EL' of Spartan Steel on the extreme left. Most of Cowper St from Newtown Row has been demolished but there are some buildings left on the corner of Summer Lane opposite the Three...

    Cowper Street

Brummy-Lad, you're right, (my 2nd mistake) No 13 is the last but one house. Your photo intrigued me (#149), but after looking, it looks like the photo is looking towards the street as there were building walls at the top of these 'places'. If that is the case it can't be Andover. If it was...

    Cowper Street

Yes, you're right. I didn't notice that gap, too busy looking at the buildings in the background. It's got to be Coleshill Place. Ah well.

    Cowper Street

Hi brummy-lad, I was interested to see you have mentioned No 66 as my wife was born at 13/66, the last house on the right as you look up Andover Place. I've never been sure if this photo was Andover, Burton or Coleshill Place but, after seeing Mike's map #138 I am convinced it is Andover Place...

Gower Street Boys and Girls Schools

Hi John, I was there 1957-61. Teachers I remember there were Headmasters Mr Matts & Mr J.T.D Ball, also Mr Williams, Wally Eyton, Mr Dean, Mr Ward and Mr Cross. I made this map a few months back showing where the school buildings were at that time over a 2020 Google view. Gower St extended...

    Bicycle manufacturers in Birmingham

On my 12th birthday my Dad bought me a Coventry Eagle bicycle from a cycle shop on Lichfield Rd (just along from the Vine pub). I had a few bikes in my teens but this is my current mode of self propelled transport which is used at various 1940s events.
