    Pubs Of The Past

Hi Astonian, this photo is a bit before our time I suspect but, this is the White Swan I remember when Aunt Betty ran it in 1959.

    Pubs Of The Past

Thanks for your help folks. The Travellers Rest it was. Actually, I also lived opposite the White Swan in the 60s at 80 Victoria Road. In fact, my Aunt Betty Middleham ran it about 1959.

    Pubs Of The Past

Hi Terry, it's not the Scotch House I'm looking for. Pub I referred to was in Whitehead Rd between High St and Victoria Rd. Thank you for your reply anyway.

    Pubs Of The Past

Does anyone know the name of the pub that was on the corner of Whitehead Road & Barton Bank in Aston? A photo would be great.

    Unused railway "arm" in Digbeth.

Thanks Phil, that clarifies it perfectly for me. Would love to see if there was a photo of them though.

    Unused railway "arm" in Digbeth.

I've always been intrigued by these structures in Great Barr St/ Liverpool St. Reading the previous comments, I conclude that they are an unfinished project. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if the bridges were ever built over the roads and dismantled later.

    Alma Street, Six Ways, Aston

Seeing this from Mikejee, my wife's family lived at No 9 Whitehead St (next to the factory) until everything was demolished in 1967 and I've often wondered what happened to Nos 11, 13 & 15 . Also, opposite was open ground with a petrol station on it. Could it have been due to WWII bombing? Would...

What was in the B.C.T. Conductors Black Box

I always had the same one. At the end of the day after paying in, I would put it in a small locker to which I had a key. This locker had no back to it, which enabled the ticket numbers to be checked against what I had paid in. This check was carried out randomly but, was usually once a fortnight.

    Lozells Girls School

Just been trawling through this thread with my wife Sheila. She was there from 1958-1962. She remembers those teachers Miss Reed, Miss Gumbly. Miss Cage. Miss Jewel. Sheila says that when she did cookery, it was on the upper floor of the building on the left of the photo on Lyn's post #134. I...

    Whitehead street, Aston

This is an incident that happened in Whitehead Street during October 1963. I wonder if anyone living in the area at the time remembers it. My girlfriend of 3 months lived next door to the house in the photo and the Mr Albert Rogers mentioned in the article was my future Father-in-Law.

    Whitehead street, Aston

A photo from the Alton Douglas book, Birmingham in the 60s. It shows the corner shop run by a Mrs Herbert which was on the corner of Whitehead St & Alma St. It was taken in 1967 when the Street was closed due to the coming re-development.

    Whitehead street, Aston

Just came across this pic which was taken at the same time as my other photo. This time looking to the corner of Whitehead Street & Alma Street. The open ground on the right was part of the petrol station.

What was in the B.C.T. Conductors Black Box

I was a bus conductor in 1969 at Coventry Road Garage. We used to have certain shops on 53 & 54 route that would make us a billy can of tea to drink at the terminus. It cost us 4d!

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

In 1959 I lived 28 Birchfield Road right opposite Mansfield Rd (marked red). It was a big Georgian type house and must have belonged to someone of note back in the day. Does anyone remember Harry Bastable's shop? He was a speedway rider in the 40s/50s? and owned the motorcycle shop on Birchfield...

    Whitehead street, Aston

Thanks Phil, I'm happy to see any photos sent. I haven't seen this one before. With that island there I would say it was taken around 1968-9.

    Whitehead street, Aston

Whitehead Street was a short Street which lay between High St & Alma St Aston. I've seen pictures of the Scotch House Pub on one corner and Herbert's Shop on the other corner but, I've not come across any other photos of it anywhere. It had a Regent petrol station opposite where my wife lived, a...

    Where did you live

Hi Graham, I'm fairly new to the Forum and I just noticed your post (Nov 3rd 2009 - post#6 Where Did You Live). I lived at 69 Leamington Road 1954-55 but, I believe the photos were all hacked at that time. Could you possibly re-post them. Barry

    Whitehead Road Aston

Yes, it was an off licence in early 60s. This is Whitehead Rd looking down to High St. Rifle Crescent would be on the right of this photo. Can't remember what the shop further down was. Stars

    High Street, Aston

We had our wedding reception at the "Sharholders" in 1967 which stood on the corner of Park Lane & Potters Hill. It's still there now, derelict and standing on it's own. Does anyone know why it hasn't been demolished? Did they give it a listing along with the Bartons Arms? (joke)
