    Soho & Winson Green Station

Thank you for the wonderful You Tube link to GWR 57XX Pannier Tanks. What a great way to spend part of a Sunday afternoon listening and watching these great steam engines going through their paces. Included the 5775 used during the 1st Railway Children movie shot along the Keighley Worth and...

    Soho & Winson Green Station

Thank you for many happy childhood memories. Used to spend my pocket money travelling on local GWR train journey from Soho and Winson Green Station in the early 1950's to go train spotting with fiends on Snow Hill Station. Exciting to safely open carriage window to feel and smell the smoke from...

    Snow Hill Station

Thank you Pedrocut for finding such a wonderful photograph of Brummies waiting to start their annual 2 weeks holiday on Snow Hill Station in 1954. It puts our jigsaw puzzle in perspective . We wonder how much the return fare to Cornwall was in 1954 only 10 years after the end of WW2

    Soho Road Handsworth

I went to Jacques on Soho Road with my Mum every week shopping, opposite junction with Boulton Road in late 1940's and early 1950's. I always remember Jacques trading in Fruit and Vegetables. I dont remember the butchers side of the business during the years indicated

    Soho Road Handsworth

I used to go into these shops with my Mum in late 1940's early 1950's . She still had to use her ration books up until 1952. Virtually everything was sold loose into paper bags - none of this prewrapped food in plastic bags

    Soho Road Handsworth

Thank you Rob again. Another great photograph on a busy 1968 shopping day. Exactly how we both remember Soho Road near the Boulton Road junction. By then we had moved to our first home near Barr Beacon between Streetly and Aldridge but still came to visit our parents living in the Handsworth...

    Soho Road Handsworth

Thanks for wonderful photo Rob. Brought back many childhood memories especially the famous Little Red Shop on Soho Road in Handsworth. Passed this every day coming home from school on No 11 bus which then turned right down Boulton Road chosen on the picture. There was a bus stop opposite for No...

    Holyhead Road

Thank you for these 3 pictures of Holyhead Road opposite the New Inns. My wife said that she never noticed the old sign for Handsworth Market and the Bull despite working in LLoyds Bank next the Albion Cinema on the opposite corner for 7-8 years. The only Handsworth Market we both remember was...

    Farcroft Hotel Rookery Road Handsworth

Sad to see and hear that the Farcroft has suffered from a fire. My wife's father, sister and parents lived most of their lives almost directly opposite the Farcroft on Rookery Road. Her father played in a dance band called the Santiago Boys. Went to several family and friends events. My school...

    Soho Road Handsworth

Superb photograph. Spent many happy hours in Handsworth Library researching for my school projects and homework in 1950's. We are now spoilt with instant access to questions using the internet

    Bournville Village

Sad to hear this. Every prize giving day at Bournville Boys Grammar Technical School most of the Cadbury Family turned up to give out the prizes. If I remember I had 2 History and 1 Art prize but cant remember which member of family gave them to me. Most of the school trips twice a year were...

    Bournville Village

Yes as an ex pupil of the new Bournville Boys Grammar Technical School between 1955-1961 built with help of Cadbury's family I was pleasantly surprised and pleased that Bournville had a special mention in the new PM's speech at the CPC yesterday. Lets hope that good work that the great hub that...

    Black-out preparations across Birmingham

Thank you Vivienne for the post on Blackout Regulations. It reminded us of my wife's parents who married in Handsworth on 1st September 1939, the day war broke out. They were due to go on honeymoon to North Devon but ended up putting up blackout. Most of their luggage had been sent on to North...

    The Soho Manufactory

I did not realize that Matthew Boulton contributed to the inclusion of standards for design and measurement and repeatability so early in 1790's. I guess this was a requirement for his success with constistently mass producing accurate coins. Also I did not realize that he arranged health care...

    The Soho Manufactory

Facinating forum contributions thank you. Shame that such a famous historic building was demolished so soon . it would not happen now Soho Manufactory was founded by Matthew Boulton in 1766 on the then Soho Estate in Handsworth, Birmingham in its own grounds, along side Hockley Brook, which is...
