New HS2 Station in Curzon Street

Here is a 1986 view looking towards Curzon Street. In those days Royal Mail had taken over the Parcels depot and ceased the rail services but used it as a road distribution depot. Later all the structures in the foreground were removed, and now form part of the HS2 Station Site.

    Birmingham International Station

As noted in a previous thread this station was completed in 1976, but unlike the view that shows the Maglev Bridge over the road this was the view when first completed. The station has changed over time, but still retains the 4 platform arrangement. There is space for a fifth. In these times...

    Steam Locos

There have been occasions where steam trains have visited Birmingham International Station, but this image seems to be not that time or deserves to be in this thread

    Canals of Birmingham

The view of Hickman's furnaces ( which were soon, if not already Stewart's & Lloyds) shows the blast furnaces, a canal basin (there were others into this vast site), and railway tracks. These furnaces had replaced other previous furnaces on the site which can be traced back to the first furnace...

    The Railway that never was

I have tried to fathom Christain Wolmar's approach to railway history, but have yet to discover the heart of it. He has written several books and sometimes gets approached for "expert" opinions, but there is always a discrepancy in the detail. If he was talking about the Grand Junction...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

Is it also the line at the back of the railway end at St. Andrews? Remember the smoke that would envelope the pitch in steam train days! Yes that was the case with the Birmingham City Football Club Ground. The direct route from Saltley that passed under the London Line had freight trains that...

How information was handled on the Railways

Yes the railways did change with time. With signalling it was the practice at night to use a red light for danger, but early railways often used white to progress. Green was for caution. In our modern world the Power Signal Boxes have been replaced by the signalling centres. For Birmingham it...

The changing face of Birmingham Railways

    Zero Emission Buses

As the push to a carbon neutral life continues the electric bus is becoming more common on the streets of Birmingham. The No 6 to Solihull is a recent example of an electric bus.

Boat builders in and around Birmingham

Sheepcote Lane was beside old Birmingham Canal, what is now the Oozells Loop. It is now Sheepcote Street. If I recall correctly Broadfields Dock is mentioned in rate books. It is also shown in a previous part of this thread. The land belonged to the Grammar School and it seems that Samuel...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

Yes the tram depot was Kyotts Lake As to the bridge, there seem to be alterations as given by the answers supplied. It would be of interest to see what Captain Moorsom, as the principal engineer intended for the bridge, but in 1840 bridge design for railways over roads was very different from...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

There is a bridge on this route where the Stratford Road is crossed. It has the look of may be a Birmingham & Gloucester Railway Bridge, but could be later. This was the turnpike and later a street tramway. A modern view looking from the round about side shows: But a previously posted image...

    Curzon Street Railway Station

No that viaduct was built for the Birmingham & Oxford Junction Railway, this one carried Curzon Street over the railway tracks and was called Curzon Street Bridge on the plan. The arrangement as built differed from this plan.

    Curzon Street Railway Station

In the Science Museum of images of Curzon Street there is one captioned Curzon Street Viaduct. Not all the plans there were carried forward and this one seems not to have happened and the London & Birmingham Railway build a level crossing instead to reach their goods yard

    Stechford Viaduct

A set of the Aston to Stechford Rail plans have come up for auction. These are large scale London & North Western Plans that show the track arrangement at the time of reconstruction. They show the route of the Old Road that once crossed at the level crossing and the new bridge to the south of...
